What all would it take to do this. I hear speed density has numerous benefits over mass airflow. regardless of this, speed density systems seem to have more options available and eliminate an expensive and annoying part of my car, the MAF. Speed density computers and connectors are for sale on ebay for abuot $60 for the computer and $30 for the sensors themselves. anything else needed for this? Is the conversion doable?

Or you could just leave it MAF. At this point in the ball game, I don't know if the ends would justify the means. That is a fair bit of work, and I guarantee that as of right now, your MAF is NOT a restriction. If you are referring to the car in the sig.

a restiriction? The SD system is much more programmable
and the MAP sensor is much cheaper to replace than the MAF sensor..
The MAF probably won't be a restriction until about 400 fwhp on a N/A motor.

I was actually just throwing that in as a side note. I can't imagine throwing that much work into something because it is a little more programmable. By the way, aren't those Wells Units warrantied for life at $175? Did I read a sig wrong? I personally would rather have a $175 lifetime warranty MAF than convert to speed density at a higher price (by the way, if anyone has converted to speed density for less than that...good job Originally posted by 85MikeTPI

Having just Done essnetially this this past weekend, I can say its not very difficult.
I followed Mike's Pinout Diagram, and was repinned in a few hours, taking my time and Telling stories the entire time.
Its really one of those things that everyone with a MAF car should do, whenever they have a spare day.
its pretty straitforward.

BTW My 486 here just Went Kaput on me. I can get another 486 MB and processor for a couple hundred bucks, and it will slide right in.
Why should I go through all the trouble of converting to a P4 for a Higher cost?

I am NOT turning this into a MAF VS. Speed Density pissing match. There have been enough of those I am sure. My point was this:
*The current MAF works fine
*Not a restriction for him as of yet (This means I don't think he will be running 11's with a little PROM tuning and his mods)
*Spend the $$$ on something else
*If its not broke, why fix it?

The bottom line is that if you plan to have anything more than a stock engine, you should swap to SD for the greater tuneability, driveability, and reliability.... The performance potential of the system being much greater than the MAF system is a bonus for now and a necessity when/if you start getting serious with the mods.
And I did the entire swap for about $100 and I went with a new GM knock sensor (everything else used)......
Oh, and pretty much a ditto on the actual swap details Bort..... I seem to remember BS-in quite a bit when I did mine too
