Let me introduce myself

Hello all. I have been looking at these boards for a couple weeks now and decided to get in on the fun! I have a 88 L98 Iroc. It has 174,000 miles and my best 1/4 to date is 14.30.Slow I agree but not to awefully bad considering I have the 9 bolt with 2:77 gears Mods are hypertech stage 2 chip, 160 stat, cut out dual snorkle air cleaner with k&ns, ram air boxes, white faced gauges,Lumina z34 steering wheel and a jamex strut tower brace. I plan on a rebuild sometime in the future. I have a set of vortec heads and 1.6 roller tip rockers for when I do the rebuild. I am glad to be a part of this board and maybe share some knowledge about our great 3rd gen. f-bodys. I look forward to contributing and learning on these boards.

LOL Nah I dont think so. Not yet anyway!LOL My wife has called me the same thing a number of times so dont feel alone.. Nice to meet you all.

Oh, great! Now I have to break out the old Stones vinyl to listen one more time.

Welcome aboard!

I hope you find this site useful, if not at least recreational and sometimes amusing. It would be great if you have experiences and abilities that you can contribute as well. We're all here to share ideas, theories, and learn from each other.

BTW - If Bort is the "Azzhole", I'm probably the part on the anterior of that same region - not the female half, either, thank you very much. (You'll be able to pick out those who have a lot to contribute on your own, so you can draw your own conclusions. I think you'll find that Bort fits the "Good Resource" category.)

That's a decent time for a 2.77 Borg axle, and I bet you still lose traction. It might not be the optimal gear ratio for those short runs, but I enjoy the heck out of those gears when cruising those boring interstate stretches at the speed limit or so (times 2 or more if you ever really need to).

After a while, even track speeds seem slow once we get accustomed. You're probably just too comfortable with the current performance levels, and need something to push yourself a little out of that comfort zone. Of course, the cycle repeats until you are striving for four-second runs and redouts on launch, when you realize there just isn't much more to achive. Sad, isn't it - this affliction we share. It must be really disappointing to be a Navy carrier pilot who has to drive a car to work. (Even shuttle astronauts don't realize those G's.) What a let-down...

Again, welcome to the family. We won't ask for any holiday gifts this year - you get a freebie since you're new.

And watch out for that "Bort" guy - I hear he can be an "azzhole"... (HI, Bort!)

A knowledgeable one at least, and as Vader mentioned above, "a good resource".

Vader, Thanks, Yes I do have a problem with traction even with the 2:77s. I can run around 20-25 mph on the street and strike it and she will break sideways. Not very fast doing that but it sure is fun!!! I can heat the tires up all day long at the track and I still have to leave the lights around 3/4 throttle. My 60 foot times are in the 2.08-2.10 range.I can only imagine how I will have to launch it when I get a set of 3:73s. I have had people tell me they have never seen a stock 350 run like mine with that many miles, but I dont know because this is my first TPI car. I went from a 91 3.1 camaro to my Iroc so when I first got it it seemed extremely fast compared to the V6.You know the story now..seems slow. I did however tinker with the 3.1 and ran consistant 16.20s with it. Anyway I am getting carried away here. One more thing Vader... Please to meet you, hoooooo hoooooo...LOL

Thanks for the tip smurfn. I had my eye on a 9 bolt 3:45 rear from a 5 speed car. Maybe I should get that instead of the 3:73s? I figured with the overdrive the 3:73s would still be fine. Basically I want a fast 1/4 car that I can still run at highway speeds without taxing the engine. Any advice is certainally welcomed.

Welcome to the board. The beers over in the corner.
To correct your tracing problem you might want to get a tourqe arm. There lots of after market companies out there that have fantastic products for our cars. I wouldn't know though because the credit card company is going to break my nose is I charge anything else. JK

Maybe I can learn from you already. How did you do the dual snorkle air cleaner thing with a MAF TPI? If you have an illustration picture it would be apprecitaed as well.

Thanx

Cool,It is just the stock plumbing. The one that runs over the radiator shroud. It has dual inlets so I called it a dual snorkle... I hope you dont think I mean the dual snorkle breather type found on the 4bbl cars because that isnt what I have needless to say. I had one and sold it on ebay. Made a nice profit. If this didnt answer your question please respond..

Vader, you are too much,

I just read the first part of your response above.

L98Jerry, Vader is one of the most knowledgeable people on this board. You can take what he says to the bank! (if he would give you some money) Seriously, he knows his stuff.

Welcome aboard.

No way why would you think that? I just thought you had a cool mod I didn't know of yet. Unfortunately I'm still struggling with the very restrictive intake tubing that came on 86 TA's with TPI and I'm looking for inexpensive ways to remedy that situation.

For some reason I was thinking he did something similar to the SLP Dual CAI

Welcome aboard L98Jerry. If you run into a problem, this is the
place to be. And don't pay any attention to Bort, unless he is
giving advice, then you can sit up an listen because he usually
knows what he is talking about.

These Guys are too liberal with their comments, I think

You've been quiet as of late Swap, havent seen ya round.

I think you will discover that this board is a wealth of information that boggles the mind. It can turn even a silly 21 y/o kid like your's trutly into a supposed authority... All with just a little interest and reading.

Hell, I don't even own a TPI. - lol.

Oh, for a bit of tech content.

I would reccomend 3.42's over 3.73 in a TPI car because the 3.73 will tend to wind you out of the relatively modest powerband before the traps, costing you ET.

In Fact, I am going to a 3.23 from 3.42 to compliment my in-progress TPI install.

However, if 1/4 mile performance is your ultimate goal, You can use your trap MPH and Effective power peak to calculate the ideal gears to squeeze the maximum ET from your combo.

But IMO there is more to life than the dragstrip, and I build my car's accordingly.

That's the same reason I'm considering putting my original 2.77s back in to replace my 3.45s. Talk about top speed, woohoo!

I try to browse the boards when I can. I opened a new repair
shop, American Auto Repair, and have not had much free time
lately. It's been 6 months of non stop action. Things are starting
to settle down some so I should be able to get to the boards
more often.

Bort, I hear ya. I agree. I want a quick car but I want it to be drivable. ETs arent everything. I just posted a question on the tranny and drivetrain section. I believe you just answered it. Thanks!

Oops, Im living up to expectations already... I better change that.

Get some 4.10's DOOD. It will really make u take those LS1s off the line man! Cept u Better get a posee and some Drag radials maybe too to hookup!

My car has 4.10's and I beat LS1's till 3rd gear!

Or something... I think a 3.45 9 bolt would work perfectly in your application. I would use one if I had it on hand.
