Buick 455 Tuned Port
Buick 455 Tuned Port
I have the chance of gettin a Buick 455 big block. I was wondering if the 305 Stock TPI system could hold up to the big block? What size injectors would you use? What would have to be done to the computer to run this setup? If I buy the motor I would like to keep it a TPI but would, if absolutely nessesery, change it over to a 4-barrel. Plus, I was wondering if the battery, coolant, and windshield wiper sprayer thing would have to be moved? Thanks
A Buick 455 and a Chevrolet small block are two very different motors. If you were very good with welding aluminum and could build a base manifold and runners... you might be able to use the plenum, fuel rails, & throttle body from your TPI. Highly unlikely though. More than likely you'll need to buy a good intake and 4bbl carb. There was a red & silver 87' TA featured in Hot Rod a few years ago. It has a Buick 455 in it, I saw it in person at the Hot Rod Power Tour in 99'. Neat car.

would the intake off the 502 ramjet or whatever you call it (GM h.o crate motor) work on the buick 455?
i would think that the heads wouldn't line up too nicely and all the other things..

Not sure if Bell has a web site... you can reach them at (909)941-6646. I don't have a web site handy, but there are some shops out there that do nice EFI conversion work. Hopefully someone that has done this will have a link and see this thread.
It's not a bad motor really, that guy they featured in Hot Rod ran 11.70's w/ BFG Drag radials. The car had exhaust manifolds, cold AC, and 3.23 gears. He told me he averaged 21 MPG for the trip. When I asked him about the performance of the car he pulled out a stack of timeslips almost two inches thick. :hail:
I think for everything but an intake and carb its 400, b/c I'm the guys friend. I might just purchase it and make my FI car Carbed. How do you run the fuel line and all that b/c the pumps on the side of the motor ours is in the tank.

I had a buddy with a 77 trans am . it had a 455 4- spd in it .....I thought it was " weak " my 305 could have took it ( didn't have it then )
Get an adjustable regulator to step the pressure down from the fuel tank mounted pump. Or, go through more work and get a gas tank from an older carbed F-body and run the engine mounted mechanical pump. I think the exhaust manifolds that cleared w/ the 455 were from a 65' skylark.
Skip the TPI, but you can do a TBI. I'm installing one on a pontiac 400 motor. Basically all you need is a carb->TBI adapter that mounts like a carb spacer. You'll want a 454TBI I'm sure, and bigger injectors. Anyhoo, the guys on the TBI board can help you out.

i wouldn't waste the time with tbi personally.
someone else mentioned convert over a carb intake. That's easily your best bet for EFI on it. you can even use the tpi throttle body, computer, and harness.
Accel sells an elbow that mounts on a carb pad and accepts a 2 bore tpi-style throttle body. Get a carb intake set up for injectors, get some custom fuel rails done up, and the elbow and you're in business. Obviously you're gonna want a custom chip and bigger injectors to feed a much bigger engine.
it also is gonna very likely require a cowl hood because it's a 455 and the elbow i'm talking about isn't very low profile.
