I am about to install a new cam here shortly. My heads are getting a multi-angle vavle job and the car is at the body shop, so I am just killing time.

I've got my Comp Cam, and I just got magnum 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers and a set of comp cams pushrods.

I managed to snag some 350 springs from my good friends old 350 heads, becuase he just got new springs for his corvette heads he just bougth.

So check,

Is there anything else I need to spend my money on?

prolly a good time to do a timing chain too.
gaskets... head, water pump, T-stat...
fluids.... oil, coolant...
new spark plugs
check your belt(s) does they need replacing

is that the kind of stuff you mean?

or more like
engine enamel paint to make the parts look pretty. as long as the intake is off clean it up and put a coat of high temp paint on it. or polish it if you have that kind of patience and time.

What type of 350 springs, Are you sure the springs will be sufficient for the lift of your new cam with the 1.6 rockers?

 

Well since the heads came off for valve job, of course I have all new gaskets.

I just ment is there something I'm missing here that should be replaced.

The springs are from a 350 L98 corvette aluminum head. The cam isn't radical or huge, its alittle bigger than the 350

Should be nice for this motor. I'm very slowly building a 402 for the car. But I am beefing up my 305 for some fun this year. Plus I have a buddy lined up to pay me some good money for my 305.

The life of 1.6 rockers is really well, I have already used the magnums before on my other car. 1 1/2 and holding strong and looking good.

So I figure they can go to my other block when it gets to that time

 

I'd probably go ahead and get new valve springs anyway. You already have the heads off and apart, might as well put in brand new valve springs. Unless you actually checked the spring pressure on each one to see if they're within specs, old springs will lose pressure over time and can fail. It's just good cheap insurance.

 

Yeah, definitely replace the springs IMO. For a cam that small, the machine shop doing the valve job should be able to hook you up with some basic perofrmance springs for $25 or so. If they do rebuilds too, might be able to get a roller timing set of them cheap too. You definitely want to replae that too.

Even though that cam isn't big, if you have a few extra bucks laying around, it coulnd't hurt to upgrade to screw in studs too while they're off. Doesn't cost much, and is a lot better than loosing a rocker on a 6k shift while running the highway at midnight.

But i'd at least do the springs and timing chain. Used springs are a bad idea, especially used GM springs, which suck brand new and quickly get worse with age. Replacing the timing chain is madatory when doing a cam swap in most people's book.

 

You may run into some bad stuff along the way. You'll have to drop the oil pan bolts, so just hope the oil pan gasket is still in one piece. If not, it will fall apart in pieces and fall inside the oil pan. You will need a new front cover seal, gasket, and water pump gasket. You may as well replace the pickup coil in the distributor if you haven't already.

 

Yeah, if you haven't bought your gaskets yet, your best deal is to just buy an entire engine kit. Pretty much whenever you jave the heads off you'll use enough of a comlpete engine kit that you're probably saving money compared to buying individuals.

 

Watch the valve cover gaskets that come in the "complete" gasket sets, they aren't the best. I had a valve cover gasket shrink an inch on one end (length wise) and caused a nice little oil leak on my new engine. I am currently using the Moroso gaskets that are nitriel rubber sandwiching a steel shim core. They cost a bit ($35) but seal great and are reusable.

Might want to look into a cam lock plate ($8) for some cheap insurance on the cam gear.
