GM Stock Rotor, i cant remove it!!!

Hey guys, heres another problem to my never-ending tune-up. Well im down to putting in the MSD cap, and everything is wired, but i cant seem to pull that damn stock rotor out!

I have a MSD rotor waiting to put in, but i cant budge that damn stock one from getting out. Thats the only thing holding me back now.

Heres a pic of it:

U guys have any idea how to yank it outta there? Theres no screws around it, only 2 which pretty much just hold down the black unit behind it where the connectors go.

Only thing the rotor can do is move little counter-clockwise, thats it. And those grey little holes just under the rotor in the rusted area are not screws so u know.

Sheeze these little things **** me off.

Anyways, thanks.

Its supposed to just pull up off of the distributor shaft... yea...

You may end up having to break/cut it off of there. The shaft gets rusty, and it really makes it hard to take the old ones off.

Oh so u just break that POS off? Is there like anything in the rotor that i need to worry about, or just take the hammer and whack that sucker out?

Whats exactly holding it, just the all the sticky, rusty **** on the bottom?

Thanks

WD-40 and light taps from underneath with a Hammer.

It's just a pressure fit - But 17 years of buildup can make that a pretty good bond.

It's a royal PITA. I had to remove my dizzy just to get the rotor off. You could cut if off or use a press and try and split/crack it off. I just ended up tapping it with a hammer and pulling on it till it came off. You might want to use some PB blaster ir the shaft is rusty.

Light taps being the key phrase you are not out to smash it off just tap it and work it back and forth and it should come off no problem. Good luck

I remember the first time I changed a rotor on mine... It took about 45 minutes for me to get it off. Pull real hard, and if that doesn't work, light taps with that hammer will suffice. Be sure you feel "two clicks" when putting the new one on. The rotor should line up with one click, and then snap into place on the second... I made the mistake of not making sure it was "all" the way in, and had to buy ANOTHER new cap after my rotor came loose and chewed up the first one.

mine took forever too when i did mine... those 14 years of buldup took a toll... i had to wd-40 it and tap it like the others... just don't whach the hell out of it though... i would hate for you to crack the shaft or something

Ya whacking it was my original purpose, guess i have to take it easy then. Soon as im done with work, i'll get to it.

So technically once i do that, then i can pop the cap on, the wires are already numbered and hooked to the MSD cap, so i just have to route the wires to there positions.

After that, attempt to switch thermostats, and finally replace the fuel filter.

my thermostat swap took me like 20 mins... i had to pull the TB to get to it though... but i did the TB coolant bypass at the same time... it isn't hard to do... just remember to throw a little RTV around the waterneck when you put it back on there to be safe

Man it seems alot of work for just the thermostat. Well when i get to it i'll get a new topic on that, and get into details on how to it, plus the TB coolant bypass.

Thanks man

Hey guys, im happy to report that i managed pulling out that stock rotor! It was a bitch though, and i ended up cracking one side of it, but it eventually gave. What finally pulled it out was taking a flat head screwdriver and placing it right between the rotor and base, and then scrape out all the goo, and **** that was there "sticking" to the rotor. After that, i kinda just yanked it out with the screwdriver, and bam, there u have it.

So now the MSD rotor is installed, the MSD coil, and the MSD cap is on. All wires are hooked up, even though i might need some new holders for them, but they shouldnt move anyway, its not like they have any slack, i cut them out myself.

Anyways, i went ahead and started the car, and hoping for the best, and it ran great! Nothin weird or unusual happening, so it seems i did a good job. Now i wish i can actually take out the car see how it feels, but i'll have to wait on that, damn salt roads.

So now all i have left is the 180 thermostat, and the fuel filter.

Thanks guys for your help so far, later.

Well im gonna see how far my muscles can push it. If i cant do it, i'll find more muscle to pull those damn bolts off.

P.S. I just ordered SLP CAI, and SLP Flow Booster Air Foil yesterday night, i couldnt resist.

What does skin color have to do with being able to pull off a rotor? Anyways....

Glad you got it off. Cracking it was probably the best chance you had unless you had a special jig and used a press.

No all i had was a hammer, screw-driver flat, and some wd-40, and it got the job done. Now im gonna go mess with the fuel filter and see if i can get that thing out.
