How to go to EFI?

I have an 85 camaro with a 305 carb'd setup in it. One of my parts car I purchased was an 86 IROC with 305 TPI. I pulled the entire setup, out of the IROC. I grabbed the motor, trans, engine harness, dash harness and the ECM.

I would like to put the TPI setup into the camaro, but I am not about to dump any money into a 305. I have several 350 motors here that I can rebuild and use.

Since I am starting from scratch I wanted to get your opinions, on the entire setup, heads, cam, TPI, and everything else. Of course, money is an object, so I do not want to spend a ton of coin on it. The car currently has a 700r-4 with a 3.42 posi rear, and a 3" Flowmaster cat back system.

Here is what I am looking for from an TPI setup.

1. I don't want to have to use super unleaded all the time.
2. Get her into the 13's.
3. Good idle to support AC.
4. Maybe the addition of a 100 shot down the road.
5. The car has to be highway driveable without the need for an OPEC supporting nation.

I hope I did not leave anything out, let me know if I did.

Thanks

Mark

check this out...

I'd imagine that your setup would bolt right onto a 350 block- especially if it's right around the same age tas the block you took the efi setup off of- if its a pre "82 350 block, you might want to check out the message board over at the 2nd gen camaro site at:

http://www.nastyz28.com/cgi-bin/Ulti...i?action=intro

alot of these guys (including myself) either have, or are in the process of retrofiting efi into there older camaros.

but if your 350 block is post '81, it should bolt right up- no sweat- and the best part- very little cash involved!

just remember- a stock tpi is really only good up to 4500 rpm, then dies off quickly- I'd be willing to trade you for my edelbrock carb/intake setup (hehe).

hope this helps- A-Saalt

p.s.- i've heard that those trannys arent built to withstand much more than 400 hp- but i dont really know- never had one- something to investigagte before hitting that nos button for the first time.

I've heard the same, but I've seen 700R-4's breakdown from cars with just 280 hp. I dont really trust them, and would prefer a TH400 anyday.

From what I've experienced, TPI engines arent very fond of high octane gas when stock. On the 305TPI I'm working on, it seems the engine runs cooler and isnt as close to detonation when running 87 octane.

I figured I would have to have the transmission gone through at some point. At the very least to firm up the shifting a bit.

I was thinking of using the 350, about 9.0:1 compression, Vortec heads, and a stock 1995 LT1 roller cam shaft for my motor. I know I would have to get a new base plate, so I may choose a different head and use the stock base, but I am not sure yet.

I love the pump gas issue. Most people use the highest octane they can find for their "race" car. They do not relaize that their stock compression 305 will not like the higher octane rating. The trick is to burn the lowest you can without detinating.
