Aluminium heads?

I'm searching locally for some aluminium heads for an 87 IROC. I am basically wanting the vette heads for the L98 block. What model years for the vettes came with L98's?

87-91, but 88-91 had the d-port heads which are better.

But unless you just have a hard-on for aluminum, there are better options, like vortec heads.

They're about $400 or $450 per pair, fully assembled brand new. Used you can find them for roughly half that.

They far outflow the corvette heads. The corvette heads have a ton of potential, but unless you're familiar with them and what works best for them, you're not going to help them much, and if you pay a pro, you'll have enough invested that you could have just got Trick Flows or AFRs to start with.

Do a search for vortec heads. You'll find a wealth of information on them here.

Remember that to run Vortecs, you need a special base.

I agree with Jim, unless you want aluminum for the weight savings, then the Vortech Heads are probably a better choice.

But since we're on the topic of the Aluminum Vette heads, I have a question. I have a 89 L98 (MAF like your 87 L98) and I'm thinking about the Vette heads because I want to even the weight distribution on my Track Car. What other components would you recommend (cam, rockers, etc) be used with the L98 Aluminum Heads on a MAF L98? I know the compression will go up about a point and EGR will be tossed (for me anyway). Pretend you didnt want an expensive trick setup. Just some cheap, easy to install components that would compliment the aliuminum heads? I dont know what to choose. Thanks!!!

There's a great post going on about the guideplates, pushrods, and rockers when putting these aluminum heads on a L98. Check it out:

After I get that sorted out, I need to choose between 1.5 or 1.6 rr's and match them with a cam. I'm thinking either zz4, LT1, or LT4 cam. I think the LT1 cams are the cheapest, saw them for around $30 on Ebay compared to around $120 for the zz4 cams. I'm wondering what the performance difference would be. I want alot of low end torque with this motor.

I see L31's rebuilt with the proper 5 angle valve job, spring and guide boss modification for sale cheap on e-gay all the time. I also see LT4 (cheap), zz4 (cheaper) and LT1 (rock bottom cheap). alot of self centering late style rockers apear on there as well.
