miss firing, please help
miss firing, please help
I recently acuired a 86 trans with a miss firing engine. I checked the codes and only 12 flashed over and over. There are three cyclinders not firing Im not sure if its fuel or the computer. I already checked the cap and didn't find any cracks and the plug wires are also good. If any one else has an oppinon i would like to hear it. Thanks for the help.

I agree with 92 zzz28. When was the last time it had a tune up? It might be time for one.
It needs more than a tune up and Is that the best u can do? I thought someone would know what to do don't any of you work on your own cars? Do you just give in and take it to a mechanic? Im not stupid about cars I know some stuff. Im just not as familiar with TPI. I have checked a lot of stuff that would be in a normal tune up. What do u think its just the plugs and Im Mr. jerkoff that knows ****. It is an internal electrical problem Im getting no codes so I think its the modual but I haven't been able to find the same one in all my junk so I will have to go to a wrecker. The frist three numbers are 908 can't remember the others right now. If this is the factory number or you need more say someting not just "yea you gotta tune up. complete." what the hell I wanted your ideas on how to fix the peoblem so I could do it myself not how to spend money on some harriy mechanic that will charge me for all kinds of stuff I didn't need just so he can solve the problem with out any effort, just continue buying stuff till its fixed. I do have a mechanical back ground, I have the tools, and the time to do this. A little help from someone more qulified with TPI is all I ask is that to freaking hard to understand.
As you can see I am very mad about this stupid car I just want to get it to run so I can sell the motor for more when I part it out.

Whoa buddy. Chill out and pull the panties out of the bunch that you have seen to have gotten them into. No one has told you to take it to a mechanic, nor did you say you had already done a tune up, so you could have included some more details. What motor is it?
The ignition module could be fried, but from my experience, when they go bad the car usually doesn't like to start and the problem will be sporatic. I had a miss on my car last week and I found that one of the plug wires was burnt a little and the spark was arching on the header. You could have a cracked spark plug too, unless you changed them already. I don't really know what else to tell you if it's not throwing any codes. If it was a sensor problem it would give you a code. Check the fuel injectors on the cylinders that are missing.
Try not to be a d!ck about it next time.

Dude, there's no "secret" black box on the TPI that only us boardmembers know about that will fix any problem just by replacing it.
Maybe some of the people here actually know what they're talking about. You'd be amazed what just a basic tune-up will do to an engine with some miles on it. I remember the first time I put in new spark plugs; it was like a whole new engine, just by replacing the plugs...

First off, when you start the initial thread give as much info as you can, even if you, with all of your technical knowlege, think it is unnecessary. With nothing to go on except "my car has a miss" what do you expect?!? I am not trying to start any pissing contest it just makes sense to me to start at the bottom and work up. I have been working on cars since I was 15. Yeah, I fixed cars since before I could drive them!!! As already stated, the TPI is no mystery. ALL engines work about the same way, some just call parts by different names. Honda calls the module an ignitor for example.
In my experince, coils, wires, and plugs cause the most annoying of ingition problems. How do you know your wires are okay? I can venture a guess that you either visual inspected them and/or used a DVOM to measure them. I have seen many a miss firing engine have plug wires that appear to be okay, yet when you change them the problem mysteriously goes away. Same with plugs. Only a few weeks ago, my engine seemed to have a profound lack of ***** at about 3000. Never had this problem before. On a hunch I changed the coil (stock w/ over 140000 mls) and the problem was no more. Not some silly sensor, not some silly wiring issue. Most of the time it is a simple solution to a simple problem.
No one likes rude people. I understand that problems are frustrating as hell. I have been there many, many times. However, there is no excuse for being rude and nasty when people are trying to help you.
Good luck, I hope you fix your problem....
