Vortec Intakes

Heya everyone! I know everyone knows about the vortec heads and their raised ports yadada yadada.....but while looking around on Ebay I saw that the latter-day MPFI intake manifolds off trucks are made for these heads. I'd imagine they would be a direct bolt on for a Gen I small-block with vortec heads. Anyone tried these or know anything about them? They seem to be a medium runner intake like the LS1, which would be an extremely nice blend on a well-cammed vortec engine.

I saw those too. The conclusion I came to was that you would probably have wiring harness issues, and ECM issues with the sensors. Not to mention they are kinda pricey to start.

I wouldn't think wiring it up would be all too hard. There are only 3 manifold sensors that matter on a MAP car, and the rest are outside the intake system. I was thinking that the way the throttle-body sticks out would make it hard to deal with, considering the hood space a 3rd gen has. It'd be something interesting to see....

I got to ride around with a buddy of mine whose truck had a 350 Vortec with that intake. It has some *****! I bet a better cam and some system tweaking could make a VERY fast motor.

I've thought about doing this, using a 7730 ecm. problems being with the vortec's injectors, are they fired sequential or are they batch fired ? & egr valves are different, the vortec egr valves look like they use a stepper motor. could a tpi egr valve bolt up to a vortec manifold ?

could be a cheap way to use vortec heads & cheap ebay vortec manifolds.

I've been told that if you use a cam with alot of exaust overlap it will eliminate the need for egr. A 730 ecm would make it batch fire vs. sequential, but I don't see where that should really matter. you'd have to find the plugs for the mat, ct, and iac and splice them into the 730 harness. Also you may have to make provisions for the map sensor, I know vortec trucks used a maf sensor, I'm not sure if they used a map sensor with it. I'd like to see someone try this, it may have better results than a tpi system. Does anyone know what kind of power band these have or what kind of peak numbers people have got from them?
Good Luck.

Drain89,

5.7L stock HP=255, @4600rpm, TQ=330 @2800rpm. I've owned a 5.0L, 1/2 ton pickup with this system & it had some ***** for a 5.0L. best mileage,24 mpg(driving across northern AZ, flat & straight for miles)

This will be my next project, now I need to start saving money for it.

Does anyone know the distace from the start of the intake runners to the intake valve on a vortec intake? Any numbers on a 5.7 vortec motor that's been built up using a bigger cam or modified heads or better aftermarket heads? The stock power numbers are close to a TPI motor, the vortec's HP is a few hundred rpm higher and it's torque is at lower rpm. This suggests that it has exremely long runners like a tpi. Could serve as a hinderance when trying to get good numbers. However, If it's about the same length as an ls1/ls6 car intake then this could be promising. I was very impressed with the powerband of my ram air, if I could use the vortec intake and get that same powerband it would be a real good thing. If it gets about the same results as a tpi then I wouldn't really be accomplishing anything.

96-up vortec truck intakes are sequential port injection, 95-below is batch fired. These intakes REQUIRE 62 PSI fuel pressure MINIMUM to work, because of the bullsh*t poppet valve setup. So a stock TPI fuel pump probably would not be up to the task. The power that the vortec motors have are not found in the intake manifold, they are found in the heads. Granted the vortec manifolds complement the heads very well as a whole, but TPI on vortec heads make a good amount of power too, without the hasse.
