I own a mustang, and just started getting into the TPI camaros because my brother really wants to buy one. I've learned a lot reading around this board and others. I know the 87-89 TPI cars are MAF, then chevy decided to step back to SD in 90? Why?

On the Ford side, MAF is the desired system for adaptibility to mods. Was the chevy MAF system a poor design?

thanks

This is a VERY debatable subject, you might wanna search/post on the DIY Prom board, you might get more responses there. I myself just switched from MAF to SD. The limitation for the MAF is it can only read to 245gms(i think thats right) and the SD is unlimited.

How far can you go with mods before needing computer work on SD or MAF? Are there no aftermarket maf's for TPI cars?

thanks

There are no aftermarket mafs for TPI cars, there is a Wells maf sensor that flows better than the stock unit, but no aftermarket peices.

How far you can go probably just depends on the car and how it reacts. The maf TPI cars respond much better to mods then does a SD car. The SD car will need more tuning for it to run right the more mods you throw at it, the maf setup would probably benefit just as much from the tuning but isn't as necessary I guess you could say to get the car to run correctly.

Dosen't the Ford MAF use a sample tube for its readings and it is just a matter of getting a different size sample tube for MAF tuning on them? Kinda wish GM had gone that route.

Ford used the EEC to calibrate for injector size. C&L uses the 'calibrated' tube size. Very crappy way to go. All the MAF should do is send an accurate read of the air going through it, nothing more. The rest should be done at the EEC. That includes A/F ratio tuning and injector compensation. When you 'tune' the MAF, it screws up the load calcs in the computer.

We have some tools for self tuning the EEC, like TwEECer and PMS.
