Not happy with cars power after HSR install... new cam needed?

I am sure that at least a few of you know that I completed my HSR install a few weeks ago. Well... after the novelty had worn off I could feel that the power was pretty much gone under 4500 RPM.

In fact, in first gear there is a spot roughly at 3500 rpm that the car stops accelerating and starts to slow down. I dunno... thats kinda weird. But then when the rpm's get higher it starts hauling.

Anyway, I think that the culprit if my camshaft. Its a comp cams hydraulic roller of course... but it was made to produce 1 thing. LOW END TORQUE. Specs are 218* 224* .495" .502" 110* LSA

So, I have 2.02 1.60 factory casting heads that have also been ported and polished(I'd say they flow about 220-230 cfm intake side), a 2400 convertor, and 3.73 gears.

What should I begin to look for, in getting a new cam? I am at a complete loss for any ideas. I have no idea how the HSR flows in terms of its intended rpm range and what not. Any suggestions?

I do not know enough about cams to help you - but I thought I should point out that you have a stock prom. I'm assuming that anyway - if I am wrong then I guess I'll just get ignored

That could be holding you back as well.

There is a problem there somewhere! Although the cam is not huge it should be making a very decent amount of power with the HSR and properly ported heads. 2400rpm stall seems a bit on the small side for a HSR setup as the HSR is a converted tunnel ram that is a pig below 3500rpm. You will also need a bunch more fuel above 4000rpm as the stock chip is not designed to deliver what is required as the TPI was dead at 4500rpm.

I just helped a buddy of mine, Esams, to hit a 13.2@101.5 with the stock long block, no cam no head work never touched below the valve covers.

We are looking for 12.9 as we add 1.6 roller rockers and a **** on tune in the chip, this will happen by the end of the month.

What exactly was done to your heads? Are you running stock valve springs?

Sounds like a tuning issue to me.

I hate computers! I just typed out a long response and its gone!

Long and short of it. All modifications were done accordingly and in harmony with all other parts. i.e. valve springs match the cam etc.

Tuning may be the real issue here but my programnmer is either dead or all my chips are suddenly dead. So its immaterial at this point because I couldn't burn a chip to save my life right now. Literally.

Wanna help me tune the car OMINOUS?

Do you have:
stock injectors?
adjustable fuel pressure regulator?
known good parts in tune-up: plugs, wires, cap and rotor?
datalogging ability?
pocket programmer, chips, etc..?

Injectors are 24#/hr as per GM standards not Ford
AFPR Yes
New plugs wires cap and rotor Yes
Datalogging ability Yes
Pocket programmer Yes
Chips..... Lemme tell you somthing about my chips. I have 4 and they all erase to 00 instead of FF. x140,096,09865,32984358!!!!!!!

I have a Memcal adapter and 27C256 Flash proms on order from Craig Moates. If they get here today I'll be testing them out. If I can program them I'll let ya know. I'll post datalogs and you can tell me what You see and what I need to do. I obviously need to get the injector constant to 24# rather than 22# and after that there are a few things I want to change too.

I'll let you know.

Sounds like you need some work on the chip. Getting a basic tune close should be fairly easy to obtain with the MAF setup. A few minor changes here and there and a basic reworking of the spark tables and adding of some PE fuel.

About the injectors,
what are they from?
you are positive they are rated at 24lb/hr at 43.5 psi?

The injectors are the 24# injectors from Accel. I was nearly 100% certain that they are rated at GM's prescribed fuel pressure. If they aren't, no biggie, its an easy fix with the chip and fuel pressure.

I am using the arap.bin right now in the car. Its the only chip that I didn't ruin I guess... So I am not gonna chance it and ruin that one without a backup for right now. Its literally all I have.

I'll get some datalogs on my way home tonight and tell ya what I see.

Do you have AOL IM? if so, my AIM name is braddz28. Its always on because I am on cable at home. But I can sign on here for a minute if you're on.

Good news, finaly figured out my little problem with the programming. I burned a lightly modified arap.bin last night for the 24# injectors and the car runs better. It runs like hell in Open loop though. OMINOUS, I'll try to get my datalogs up from last night. I can say though that with my setup I did NEARLY max out the MAF with a reading of 242.30 g/sec. O2 readings looked good... they were between .888 and .960 at WOT. Thats where I want to be isn't it?
