cam for 305 tpi

I have basically a stock 305 TPI Firebird and was wanting to know which cam I should use for my new setup. I plan to rebuild the engine and get a new cam and have looked at many cams. I've been thinking about the ZZ4, an LT1 cam, LT1 hotcam, and the LT4 hotcam kit. Which would be best with my TPI?

the hot cams might need a stall converter, not to sure tho. the zz4, and both hot cams will need a lot of prom tuning, the lt1 will need some tuning but u might be able to get away with a stock prom verse the others.

list the specs on those cams as well the hot cams might be to big for the little wee-o-five.

LT1 and LT4 cams are designed more for a flat torque curve and higher RPM. Put that in a 5.0 stock and chances are you will be disapointed. Those cams are better suited for carb'd engines or engines with a lt1 intake or steathram. Something a prom guru can tune to run up to valve float. Utlize what you have. Run short duration and high lift. Utilize the high port volocity through head modifications ( porting ), Good exhaust flow and a small cam shaft and 1.6 rockers with stock TPI. This simple formula will make your car play hard in the rpm-torque-horsepower curve that it was designed too.. BTW make the engine a 5.7 and up the fuel pressure to about 50 and enjoy.

My edit..... if you get a 5.7 don't put 5.0 heads on it... The valve arangement alone in the head pushes the two valves closer together in the cylinder... The exhaust valve transfers heat to the intake valve and fuel mixture which starts expansion early allowing far less of an area for fuel / air to form and swirl.

90 FXF. What is your opinion of 305 heads on a 350 based on? I did a search on that topic yesterday and only found positive comments. I will have to make that decision soon and am looking for all the info I can.

the intake valve would need to be increased to a 1.94 other then that they are the same except for the smaller chamber that'll bump up the compression a bit.

I have a LT1 Cam in mine and I love it! It worked fine pretty much right off the bat , before I started prom tuning. With my mods I had to add extra fuel to the VE tables, cant say what the results will be on a 87 MAF car, but it think there would not be a problem due to it reading mass air flow the computer should compensate.

the 305 heads would be a bad idea over all cause of the small intake runners, small valves, and overall small chamber. You would be better off just getting a set of alum. vette heads and have them ported if your gunna run such a high CR. Also alum. heads will work great on high CR engines. the ZZ4 cam is probably the cheapest brand new. LT1 cams are cheap, but have been used in cars. I got my ZZ4 out of a crate engine and paid 120 for it shipped. Its brand new, and looks awesome. You can see it if you go to car domain site. its on the 3rd or 4th page. I cant wait to put on my SR torquers and throw in the new bump stick and see how many 5.0's and other cars i can surprise this summer.... Also, i need to find someone who can and will burn PROMS. I really wana max all of this out.

lt4 hot cam

I have the hot cam in my 305 with the mods listed in my sig. When I first got the car running with out any tuning it went from 211rwhp to249rwhp and from 296rwtq to 314rwtq. This was before prom tuning and 24lb injector. With those two mods the car has substantial more power from 4500-5500. However if you're going to run an auto you will need a 2800-3000 stall I waiting for my Yank 3000 to come in to take it to the track and redyno. but aas soon as I get some numbersd I will post
