And let me tell you has it been exciting.

We took the plenum and runners off and was it icky.

The whole interior of all of it was absolutely carbon coated..
My husband chipped large pieces of carbon off the inside of the plenum. I dont wanna think what woulda happened had that gotten inside the Z's motor.

Anyway we cleaned it out with carb cleaner and tried our best to do it to the runners.. REALLY didnt want to take them out.

Is there anything I should do before we get the EGR valve back in tomorrow and put it all together again?

Is there regular maintanence for the carbon issue?

We changed the valve covers and put new gaskets on. Also my car now has a breather instead of running the hose back to the throttle body. Hopefully that will help the carbon problem.

make sure you clean out all the carbon you can, because if you just put the new egr on the carbon will clog it up.

 

Do some porting while you have the plenum off. Take out the small walls at the inlet of the plenum where the TB mounts.

Make sure you clean up the TB blades while your in the cleaning mode.

This would also be a good time to install a adjustable fuel press. regulator.

also can you show me a picture of the walls you were saying to port out? (I REALLY dont need to kill my plenum.)

 

If you remove the throttlebody and look down the bores of the plenum, you'll see 2 rectangular "walls" coming up from the bottom of the plenum, and behind them are 2 holes for EGR, those are the walls you want to remove.

If the EGR, runners and plenum were that coked up, you really need to remove the intake manifold and clean out the EGR passages in it. If they are plugged too then adding a new EGR valve won't help at all.

 

Yup he's right.

If there is that much carbon, then you can almost be assured that the passages in the intake are PACKED with it. This is a common thing on higher mileage engines.

You might also want to make sure you're not burning / using any oil, as this will add to this.

In fact, 90 percent of the time, if not more, the actual EGR valve is NOT the culprit. It's the carbon that has CLOSED OFF the passage, and the EGR can't do it's job because nothing can get through.

When we took the EGR valve off it was done. it needed replaced...

We cleaned out the carbon from the passages.. here's hopin it works out...

however we're still gettin the code on cold start up (husband thinks its the wire from the EGR valve. new one on the way)
