L98 dyno results

I dyno'ed my car the other day on a Mustang Dyno:

181.7hp
280.03tq

these are CORRECTEd numbers on a hot day.

I've heard a dynojet would've got me about 204-206hp... that sound about right?

My mods are: Hooker 3" exhaust, MSD coil, 2400rpm stall converter & shift-kit, TB coolant bypass. Car still has catalytic converter etc.

I'm going to remove the smog/cat, do a few of the free mods (already just did the ram-air K&N intake idea) and then some headers/y-pipe

Sounds pretty low to me for a 350 tpi.

Does sound a bit low for a tpi 350 bud. For comparison, mine was 229hp/342tq with similar mods on a 124k 1989 L98.

Is your tranny in good shape?

this was made with full emissions and a small catalytic converter, it was a sunny day and quite hot.

i'm going to run 91 octane and bump the timing a degree or two, remove the cat/smog equipment and then check for any vacuum leaks etc.

tranny is fully rebuilt as of 6 months ago, same with engine.

I am suspecting hot weather, small catalytic converter and 87 octane gas the culprits of being about 10hp low.

Like I say, on a DynoJet Dynomometer I would've got about 210hp, which is still about 5-10hp too low, right????

But CORRECTED means it doesn't matter what the weather conditions were....

Mustang dynos read about 15% less than a dynojet. That does seem kinda low...

chassis dynos you usally loose like 20% right? and then if its a mustang one another 15%........... so i don't think that sounds too bad considering stock they were like what ? 240hp and 330tq??

Well considering that stock they are 230HP at the crank which is about 184 RWHP with auto tranny (20% drivetrain loss) and with your few mods those numbers sound right.

Was this with a aluminum or cast driveshaft?

But anyway, those #'s don't look too bad for at the wheels power.

The 92 350's had 245 hp and 345 tq completely stock. Are you sure it's a 350 and not a 305?

Sounds like it's time for a tune up! Those definitely sound like LB9 numbers to me. Sorry. Plugs, wires, cap/rotor, get rid of that cat, put on an exhaust cutout and free mods and you should see a gain. You should expect a little HP loss b/c of the higher stall convertor you've got, but it's only a 2400 so it shouldn't be THAT much.

Yes, a dynojet usually reads a little higher than others.

Info: those are stock numbers at the flywheel and are NOT REARWHEEL NUMBERS. 20% DRIVETRAIN LOSS and his numbers are correct.

No **** man, i know its at the flywheel, but they still seem pretty low. Theres a few guys on the tbi board who've dynoed almost 180 rwhp with just full exhaust and thats on a 305 tbi. I would think an L98 would do a lot better? Sounds awful low to me, but oh well. BorlaZ06 dyned 209 rwhp on his 305 tpi and all he had was the borla catback, and an L98 is going to dyno almost 30 hp less at the wheels? Here is another 305 relatively stock that dynoed way higher than this L98. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=185047

These numbers are easily correct for what you should be running on that type of dyno.

Your motor with auto tranny is 245HP/345TQ at flywheel - 20% =
196 RWHP/276RWTQ

Dyno numbers for other types of motors with mods are irrelevant.
Take all dyno runs with a grain of salt. So many people get their cars dynoed and they ONLY look at the peak numbers, not realizing that there are spikes in the graph due to shifting or torque coverter so they are actually putting out less power than they think.

I dynoed my basically stock 170,000 mile L98 on a Dynojet, only real mod was a flowmaster exhaust and I got 191 hp 280 tq. The car ran a best of 14.2 @ 95 MPH.
