461x heads or 113 heads?

i have access to both. the aluminum vette heads have a smaller combustion chamber but a little less port volume. the 461x's are the opposite- bigger chambers (64cc vs. 58cc) but a little bigger port volume. which heads flow best in stock form and which have the best potential?

I don't think the 461 and 461x have accessory bolt holes, do they? Either way, I'd be willing to bet the Al Vette heads flow as well and the 461x's do. If not, they would still be easier to work with...as far as porting is concerned.

they don't have bolt holes- but i dont have any acc. besides the alt.- and i already have a bracket fabbed for that. so the holes (or lack of holes) don't really matter to me.

Yes the 461x has about a 170cc intake port volume which is one of the largest up to the vortec and they flow better than the aluminum vette heads. The 461x can make a lot of power. But they are now about 40 years old and may have sunken seats etc due to usage. Honestly in this situation I'd choose a set of vortec heads over either of those-newer castings, flow better stock and have the accesory holes which you may want at some point.

461 out flowing a 113 head?

I will have to disagree with that one. The 113's have a much better chamber shape and they use the new style "D" ports. Stock for stock I would use the Vette heads. I have two sets and are very happy with them. Now, if you want to spend big dollars on both, I would agree the the 461's can taken further then the Vette heads.

well i already have the 461x's, but i have a good line going on a set of the vette heads at a 'certain' place on the 'net
as soon as i figure out if i am gonna get the deal on them i think i am gonna get- that's what will make my descision (sp?) on what heads i will use. i will let you know the outcome in about 1 hour and 13 minutes

Mark, well I knew the exhausts on the vette heads flowed better, just thought the intakes on the 461x (not the 461) flowed better than the vette.

Can you share some details of your '87 Toyota? I have an '89 and have been thinking of a swap to v8 power. I am thinking that the stock rear will be ok since I think it is an 8" ring gear with bolt-in axles and Toyota usually overbuilds everything anyway. Are you by any chance running the vette heads on that motor?

Thanks,
Joel

My Toy rear did not last long, but I was running slicks and a stall at the time also. I went through 4 rears in a month and a half. Under normal driving conditions I would say they would last a lot longer.

I was running my Vette heads on a 355 I had and it ran great. I put the 355 in during the period my 383 was being rebuilt. The truck still ran 12.40's with the 355. I sent the Vette heads out, had them totally gone through and then never used them again. I have them up for sale now.

As for installing a v8, go for it. It is fairly easy to do. I little tunnel clearance is needed and you have to either run a small distributor (read: NON HEI) or notch the firewall a bit.

Mark
