Which head is best with my HSR combo?

Here is what I've been looking at: WP Sportsman II, Trick Flow 23 degree alum., or Dart Iron Eagle.

All have a 64 cc comb. chamber, flow about 200cc, and have 2.02/1.60 for valve size.

Also, they all are about 1,000 for a pair of fully assembled heads.

My motor is all stock bottom end, and I really wanna run the Holley Stealth Ram so the motor wont fall on its face at high rpms. Once I pick a head, I'll get a good cam that will go with it.

Any other heads that might be good in that price range? I'm also gonna be running a B&M stall with a stall speed of 2200-2600 RPM.

the trickflow 23 degree heads have the ports that match the stealth rams port size the closest, (1205 gasket)
the #1206 gasket is just alittle large (you could port match but theres little aluminum left for the seal

the TRICKFLOWS ARE ALSO ALUMINUM, thats a BIG PLUS
heres the flow figures

TRICKFLOW
PORT SIZE: 195
CHAMBER: 64cc
VALVE SIZE: 2.02 / 1.6
PRICE: $800.00
FLOW@.100: 65 / 70
FLOW@.200: 133 / 102
FLOW@.300: 188 / 140
FLOW@.400: 226 / 164
FLOW@.500: 250 / 183

SPORTSMAN II
PORT SIZE: 200
CHAMBER: 72 / 64cc
VALVE SIZE: 2.02 / 1.6

FLOW@.100: 68 / 55
FLOW@.200: 132 / 98
FLOW@.300: 187 / 123
FLOW@.400: 225 / 138
FLOW@.500: 240 / 150
FLOW@.600: 243 / 156
DART
PORT SIZE: 200-215cc
CHAMBER: 72 / 64cc
VALVE SIZE: 2.05 / 1.6

FLOW@.100: 65 / 58
FLOW@.200: 129 / 108
FLOW@.300: 182 / 134
FLOW@.400: 226 / 158
FLOW@.500: 258 / 168
FLOW@.600: 255 / 173

How about AFR? they are a little more expensive $1300 fully assembled and have the highest flow ratings in the .400 -.600 lift range which is what you want they also come fully ported another plus.

Out of the heads you listed, I would go with the Trickflows. But overall I would get Pro Topline 200cc. You can get them for $720 for assembled iron heads with .550 springs or $1000 for assembled aluminum heads with .550 springs.

AFRs will cost you ~1500$ after you have them decked, tapped, and delivered.

I vote TFS as well for 1000$

A matching cam would be real nice as well and your gonna be giving up low end grunt so converter would also be nice.

I would recommend against putting the StealthRam on heads preported to the 1206 gasket. The gasket opening was marked on the intake (the photo after the one GrumpyVette posted) and as you can see,,, it's just not enough metal there. I got extremely close to the machined stop inside the injector boss just opening it to a 1205 (flat across the top). So,,,, even if you weld material in the corners and have the intake surfaced you still couldn't open it up all the way to the 1206 (flat across the top). You could port around the injector boss (leaving a hump of sorts),,, which shouldn't be a big deal,,, but still. Bolt and go, you pretty much have to go with heads opened no larger than a 1205.

You have a link to someone that sells those?

I appreciate all the help thats being given. On a side note, this is only my 3rd engine build and will be the first chevy I've rebuilt. One thing that would help would be the best head that I could bolt up and go with cause I've never gotten into port work before and don't wanna screw up a good pair of heads.

If you could though, give me a ballpark figure on what most machine shops charge to do mild port work.

Thanx,
Herb

I just ordered mine June 26th from AlphaBits. If you have some time, I will let you know how long it takes to get them and see how they look. This was the cheapest place I found and they say they assemble the heads with Manley products.

Well John Lingenfelter said always take the head that flows best at .400 inch. Look at the flow numbers and one can see trick flow 23's are the shiz! >-)

Someone needs to lay the ***** on the line and get some dyno numbers or track times NA with the Pro Toplines. Everything looks great on them.

I ponied up the extra for cnc ported TFS heads and as you can see if makes a nice little bump in flow numbers:

As Cast CNC Chamber Option

0.200 135.8 98.3 138.5 105.2

Aluminum L98s /w home port, 10.6:1 - 13.23@105 - 1900DA
Aluminum Pro toplines 180cc, 10.3:1 - 13.32@104 - 3300DA

If DA were consistant, the toplines would be slightly faster, maybe .1 and 1mph. Same tune for both setups, and it wasn't ideal for either as no WB was available.

i noticed noone posted about edelbrocks. i recently bought a set for my 400. and im going to be running them this comming race season. im going to try it with stock(besides AFPR, and 24lb. injectors) TPI and then do porting to the base and run some SLP runners. i dont want power over 5k really..... when i got the heads they seemed like pretty decent castings, i paid 650 for them. they were used for about 200 miles, they looked Brand new!

Im using the edlebrocks too, the only bad thing about them (as cast) is the fact they are only 170CC Runners which for a 350 doesnt make a bad daily driver runner but on a 400 its going to be a little squeeze at higher RPMS...

Damn, forgot I had made this post.

Just for an update, I had wanted to get the TF 23 degree heads but found someone local that had a set of unported Sportsman II heads with Manley valves and the dual 1.44 spring option. Got them for $400. Had about 14 passes on them.

BTW, he had a SBC in a fox body mustang with these heads and a healthy cam running 11.6 N/A and low 10's with a 200 shot.

Good news and bad news.

Good news: the heads are brand new in the box (never used) and are setup with dual springs (.600 lift max) the price was $950.00 cash.

Bad news: he sold them last night to a guy at his work.

I come across deals like that all the time. If anyone needs parts, let me know and I'll keep an eye out. I hang arround and know ALOT of gear heads! They always have and or find deals on stuff.
