MAF question
MAF question
Hey guys, my car just recently started showing my check engine soon light. It isn't every time I start it but every now and then. I had a friend of mine put it on a machine and he said it was a code 36 which is telling me its either the MAF sensor burn-off relay, MAF sensor or defective ECM. I put my stock chip back in.... same problem. So I'm going to try a new MAF sensor and see if that is the problem. Does anyone know of a performance sensor for the TPI? I have found one at corvetteforum for $159 and another one at another site for $299. Is there a difference between the corvette MAF sensor and the camaro MAF sensor?

Yes, the WELLS SU-145 which is probably the $159 MAF you have been told about already.

No such item "as a Performance Maf sensor" for a 3rd gen TPI. If you need a new one your best option as stated, would be the WELLS SU-145 at $159. But I would replace the two sensors on the firewall first, they are about $15 each and go from there if the problem still exists.
Ok, I don't get this. My light has recently been off but still comes on every now and then. It only comes on at start-up and when it comes on it doesn't go off and if it doesn't appear within the first 10 seconds of start-up then it doesn't appear at all. The car still eats gas a lot more than usuall, however, and still has less power.
Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!...hang on with that new MAF! Check out this thread that I seem to have taken over from Fruity One. (sorry man) Vader has been helping me out with the same problem I have in my '89 IROC, and it wasn't the sensor. In fact..it doesn't seem to be the relays either. I'm still working on it.

As I'm sure you can see, Vader knows what he's talking about. I hope that helps you out.
Almost forgot...in case you didn't already know the code 36 may not be the MAF burnoff. It could also be:
Problem in transmission shift OR
Fault in direct ignition system OR
Missing pulses in electronic spark timing signal
Don't worry...I've just recently become educated on the subject as well.

Wow, I don't know how to do any of that stuff. I have a voltage meter but don't know what u mean when you check the A and D wires. This sucks, I don't know what to do and don't have the cash to take it to an auto repair shop.

Don't take it to a "repair shop" they will in all proability just check the ECM codes and replace the MAF or relays. There are (IMHO) NO competent shops out there for troubleshooting. Troubleshooting takes a long time, a through knowledge of the system you are working on and lots of paitents. They can make more money if they just replace a high dollar part, charge you a couple hours labor and send you on your way, fixed or not.
Learn your car and its systems, you'll get a lot more out of it in the long run. A digital meter costs between $20 to $300 depending on what you get. I would suggest a good mid-range priced meter from somewhere like Raido Shack (yeah, yeah hear it all before) A Fluke (tm) meter would be ideal but they are in the $300 + range and are overkill for the average do-it-yourselfer.
