Modifying computer after engine swap??
Hey guys I see all this crap about people having PROMs burnt and everything and I just have one question. Does this custom chip stuff only apply to people with MAP systems?? Doesnt a MAF automatically adjust air fuel ratios and should therefore not need any modification after being swapped to a bigger engine???
Thanks....
Thanks....

IF applies to MAF cars as well. The fact is that, at a calculated AIR intake by the MAF sensor, the computer with set tables of timing and fuel, add both for the specified air amount.
This is why MAF cars adapt so well to radical changes, however.... when you add say a bigger cam, technically bigger cams like more timing than the stock cam. Thus, you must change it in the chip.
If you just rotate the dizzy to increase Base timing, then you are lying to the ECM.
For instance.... you set base timing to 14ºadvanced, (stock is 5.98º), then when you are at an idle, and the computer puts timing to 19-20degrees... you are ACTUALLY at 28 degrees, because the ecm advanced timing from what it thinks the base is.
I hope that makes sense, and I know after my changes to TPI it helps to burn your own chip and make your car more how you want it. IE idle speed, fan turn on temps, etc.

Go do some searching on the PROM board here and go thru the stickies at the top.
