cam selection

Heres the deal. I'm getting my 350 rebuilt and I figure now is the time to do a cam swap. Its an 87 350 TPI. Its a full rebuild including flat top pistons, 3 angle valve job, and possibly pocket porting. Stock heads. I am retaining the stock TPI system but I will probally be doing some porting soon. Btw, what TPI gaskets should i use for the larger ported openings?

I'm looking for a cam that will work "well" with the stock prom, I assume I will need new springs so thats acceptable. I guess this means a pretty mild cam but thats ok. I need good streetability with "decent" gas milage. To compliment TPI i'm looking for a power band of around 1000-5000.

Btw, I have a built 700 with a 2400 stall.

Thanks
JP

ok, pretty much what I expected I was just a little concerned with prom compatibility. Where is the best place to shop for cams?

ZZ4s are always on ebay for a little over $100.00, that would be my choice with your combo.
Good Luck!

How will the ZZ4 do with stock springs? I assume I would need new ones. My engine builder suggested stock od springs from Manley for $60 that will do the job nicely for mild cams. What do you think?

Is your engine builder going to be doing the work on the heads?
The stock springs wont be any good, the others mentioned may be OK if they can handle the .474 in. & .510 ex. lift of the cam, also, your valve guides may have to be cut a little to provide enough clearance for the valve lift as well. The ZZ4 is somewhat mild of a cam but has pretty good lift.

Yes, he is doing the heads. We havn't talk about the ZZ4 cam yet. We were just throwing ideas around about mild cams and he said those springs will be good for "most" mild cams. Any other springs you recommend? Btw, i'm trying to stay on a somewhat low budget.
