need opinions on with cam to use
i have a 89 l98 block with :
30 over 10.8 compression pistons
pbr 5.7 forged light weight rods
3.75 stroker crank
ported intake with afpr on fuel rails
1 5/8 headers and y pipe
stock heads but will be ported later on
im looking for a good (roller)cam for low and mid torque and that can be used with a 2,000 -2,500 stall convertor
thanks for the help

LPE 219
TPIS ZZ9 (great torque in my 383 LTR TPI)
A Comp grind (can't find catalog!!) with duration less than 220 @.050 will yield great torque from your TPI. Use the ones designed for FI engines for greatest results.

Your going to want to change or port the heads when you do the cam swap because that is going to be whats holding you back. Are you still using the stock intake manifold?

You can use anything you want, head wise, that will allow all of your equipment to bolt to it. Some heads flow more air than others and some flow air better than others. For the greatest results find the heads that flow the most amount of air, CFMs, with the smallest runner size for your engine's needs. Big, gigantic intake ports are not necessary for a TPI motor seeing mostly or all street duty.
If it were me, I would wait until I saved some more money and do a head swap while changing cams. There is some redundant work in doing the two jobs seperatly. If you are eager to get a new cam, go for it. Then when you get new heads or decide on porting the ones you have, you will get good results if everything is matched together.
Good luck...

For your car with out spending tons of money I would go with the " lt4 hot cam" from GM. You will have to change the springs but just use the "GM" springs for the cam. They are cheap! Lose the "cups" on the stock head springs and they will be fine. I did this to my 305 and it ran 12.98 in the 1/4 and made 317 hp at the ground! The torque was off the hook at 388 ftlb. I never spun the motor more than 5600 RPM. You can buy a "kit" from GM for a little over 500.00 dollars. That will give you the cam, springs and 1.6 roller rockers.

ZZ4 cam!!! Alot of people would probably recommend this cam. It is a perfect cam for TPI because you have to do little or no EPROM work at all to make it run right. Plus it is the perfect cam for low and midrange power. Im personally going with it in my 355. If you are keeping the TPI which it looks like you are doing, the powerband will match perfectly with this cam. With stock ported heads it will work pretty nicely although when you get the money for better heads at a later date, it will work alot better. If you do go the ZZ4 cam route or are really thinking about it, I can let you know how it works in my car after it is done in about 2 weeks or so. Good luck with whichever you pick!
