TPI buying related rant
TPI buying related rant
Been looking for a month on Ebay and on this board for a 89-92 350 TPI setup. I have found you got one of 4 things.
1. The incomplete systems. People who go and sell the manifolds and fuel stuff, well, thats all well and good, but I need the harness and computer, or its not worth my time to buy. It gets too expensive that way.
2. 87 setups. Why are there tons of these on there? About 60% of the complete setups are 87 305's or 350's. I find a good deal, click the link, its for a 87. (Damn)
3. The overpriced 305 setups. Why in the hell would you ask $500-$700 for a stock 305 setup? Seriously, what are you smoking? There is always 0 bids at the end. I must not be alone.
4. What I want, a 89-92 350 setup. Find a good deal, but when auction ends, price goes up to over $500, slightly out of my budget at this point. Or someone uses the buy it now and ends the auction.
*Continues hunting*

I sold one back in july that was off of a 89 iroc 350 that had everything except the dist and the maf. It went for 375.00 plus shipping. FYI you will find one sooner or later.

It took me 2 months to find a setup, a 91 TPI off of a GTA. It was from a 305 though. I got it for $355 US. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but it was complete. Only problem was, I was putting it in a Camaro so I needed to switch a few things around, but other than that it's great. Just keep looking, you'll get what you want, gotta have patience.

Not sure what your issues are with an 87 or a 305 setup. You're only talking about some drilling of 4 holes on the base if need be, or thowing in some different injectors and $40 chip if you really want to. Hell if you are building any sort of powerful engine, should put a new set of $200 SVO's in anyway.
Cause I am weird that way. I like things staying close to the same year/model if I can. I want to goto HSR soon with it, and would like to have the easiest to retrofit setup I can, which is the 89-92's. (Especially 90-92.)
The 87's use the same bolt pattern, which is a plus.
89's dont have cold start injectors.
I want to retain the VATS (Refer to first sentence) which IIRC, started in 89 right?
A bunch of small differences that would take me a hour to post.

VATS started mid-88. Also, the 305 TPI setups and 350 setups are identical excpet for injectors and chip....and if you're going to be switching to stealth sometime in the future, you're going to need to burn your own chips and get some larger injectors anyway.
Don't give up hope - one will show up.

I do my car modding strange. I bounce back and forth on everything. Gonna do a stock TPI for now and not modify it. Keep it bone stock. Do some chassis mods like SFC's, LCA's etc. Do a 6AL, then, the big stuff starts.....
I would have to do valvetrain mods to get the car able to run to 6200 or so without valve float. (REV-KIT, slightly stronger springs, light retainers....)
Whats the point of putting a FI setup that makes it best power in the top end, when the engine wont go that high.

1986-1989 all used the 165 ECM and were MAF systems, 1990-1992 used the 730 ECM and were MAP systems, the 2 systems don't interchange without modding the harness.
To swap from the more avialable 87 to an 89 system you'd just need a custom chip (eliminating VATS and running the more up to date 89 code) and either plug the CSI system off or install it and remove the crank fuse, or leave the CSI unplugged.

First, there are few things you should be aware of:
1) The only difference between a 90-92 SD TPI for 305s and 350s are the injectors and the eprom. The 305s injectors are sufficient for a bone stock 350 (with a little extra fuel pressure) and you can reprogram the 305s eprom to work with the 350 is you are using the 305s knock sensor. If you run the 350s knock sensor, then you need a 350 eprom. Neither are big items.
2) You can pickup a 7730 ECM used by the SD setup dirt cheap at a wrecking yard. That ECM was widely used on MANY GM cars. Early 90s 3.1 J-bodies work great. Also, you can EASILY modify the harness to work from the early 90s 3.1 J-bodies. Though the 2.8 Berrattas of the late 80s used the 7730, the harness is far more limted and will not work.
3) You can convert a MAF TPI to SD TPI (1989 MAF is the best for conversion if you want VATS). You get the 7730 ECM as mentioned in #2, repin the harness (quite simple) and use a MAP sensor instead of the MAF sensor (very cheap and readily available at the wrecking yard).
Due to the limited number of 90-92 TPI F-bodies produced, you may want to consider some fo the above alternatives. But if you find a 90-92 SD TPI for a 305, that is the easiest to convert as mentioned in #1.

I have a 89 TPI setup missing a few things (harness, few sensors, and a few bolts but all the main ones are there that youd need.)
e-mail me kat@nethirdgen.org I had it listed for 300 but am open to offers.
