iac cleaning

whats the best way to clean iac, can i do it with it connected if so where do i spray, should the engine be running? if i have to disconect it should i just buy a new one or will a cleaned iac work just as good as a new one? any advice would be apreciated.

I use a cleaner formulated for EFI. For me, I spray some cleaner in it when the engine is off, then start the car and spray some more in it while its idling. If it tries to stall, give it some throttle...

You could take it off and clean it if its really dirty...I would clean it before I bought a new one for no reason other than wear and tear...

Don't just spray it down with carb cleaner, it can degrade the plastic gears in it & ruin it. A friend of mine did that while we were working on his vette, I was doing something else & not paying attention, and he went hog wild on it. It was clean but never worked again so he wound up buying a new one. The only part of the IAC that really needs to be cleaned is the tip. Take the TB off, remove the plates and clean all the passages in it, that's where the gunk builds up. Get a TB service kit first, which contains all the gaskets you'll need.
