Intermitent problem, help if you can.
I'm having an intermittent problem.
Last time I went out of the city, the car started loosing power after two hours of driving. It gave me 42 trouble code and started back firing bad. I drove like that for like one hour very slow, and then the problem went away, and the car worked fine for the rest of the trip.
I replaced the ignition module, rotor, and cap.
Thinking that will solve my problem, I headed back home and after two and a half hours of driving, it did it again, and this time it back fired really bad, it sounded like a gun shot, then I stopped for like fifteen minutes and then the problem just went away.
And drove for another two hours without a problem.
One thing that happened a few months ago that might have something to do with this problem, is that one time that I went to race the car in a 1/4 of a mile with the new intake, I missed to shift on time and the motor reved very high on first gear.
This is the first time I got the code and the car started to run like crap when I let the gas go. I went a parked the car and drove it the next day for a few minutes and then the problem went away.
This is my gees: It might have something to do with the fuel pump or the wiring from the computer. The thing is that I drive the car now and then around the city and it drives fine here.
I wish the problem was persistent.
Do you guys know if you get this kind of symptoms when the fuel pump is going bad or supplying low pressure.
If I need to check for a bad contact, where should I look?
Any input will help, thanks.

The code 42 is an ignition system fault. Id be willing to bet that its your ignition coil. The symptoms of a fuel pump going out are bucking, stalling, and hard starts. Backfiring (afterfiring actually) is not a symptom of a malfunctioning fuel pump, its usually an ignition problem. The fuel is getting to the chamber, but isnt getting ignited until it goes out the exhaust port and into the header/manifold.
