Chip for a Auto to manual change
im about to change my 700R4 for a T56.Do you think my chip will still be suitable. Its had a hypertech chip since ive owned the car(15 years)so i dont know if itll still be ok.
Its a 1985 Transam 305 TPI
Since ive had it ive added Dart Jr Sportsman Heads,Crane cam, roller rockers, cold air induction, headman headers and SLP exhaust system(no cat)AFPR,minor porting on the plenum and a airfoil
What do you all think will be my best bet?

Considering all the mods you have done to it.....I would've had a custom chip long ago. You dont really need a new chip when changing from auto to manual...you just need to rewire the VSS to hook up to the neutral safety switch.....so the computer knows whats going on. Might try posting this over on the Transmission board and asking some of the guys that have done this conversion. Might also look at the tech article for the swap.....not sure if its a 6spd, but should be the same. HTH.....

I agree with the fact that you could benefit from a new chip. To answer your specific question, you do not need a chip change from auto to manual.

You might try to find a manual chip from somewhere.
There are differences between the auto and manual chips.
Got to the DIY board and look for posts with "APYP" in them.
A lot of guys that did manual swaps tried to use their auto programming and had terrible times trying to get their cars to run right.
The majority of them swapped to the APYP bin which is the chip for a 1989 6-speed Corvette.
It's what I'm running in my '89 350/5-speed.

APYP won't work for him... he's got an 85. This is exactly why I pitched my 85 ECM and harness in favor of a newer style.
The automatic chip will allow the car to run, but it's FAR from optimal. My car ran 16s with the 350 & automatic with the stock chip. Converting it to a 5 speed made it no faster. Now with the newer computer and a version of APYP that still has the car running lousy, I'm knocking on 13s with the same motor. That's over 2 full seconds just from an ECM swap and chip tuning. If I ever get the damned thing to run half decent under 3,000 rpm, I expect to be in the mid/low 13s.
Anyway... my point to all this was that a manual chip that's tuned properly will make a big difference. Because you have an 85, you're at a pretty big disadvantage in terms of finding a chip or finding the info to burn your own. It can be done, but it'll be a lot of trial and error. Another option is to pay the $300 to have Ed Wright or somebody similar burn one for you.
