There is a coolant temp sensor in the front of the intake manifold (square shape connector) that activates the cold start injector when starting under a certain temperature. While cranking, the distributor lets the computer know that it's spinning and firing, and the computer fires off all the injectors at the same time. In 88+ the ninth injector was replaced with fuel enrichment programmed into the chip.

Are you having some problems or just want to know?

im having a major problem!! i just did a tpi swap into my 79 malibu (350) and it starts cold but will not start when its hot . i have checked the fuel psi , ignition timing, and just about everything else ive come to the conclusion its from a slow cranking speed(if that would cause the problem) os the injectors arent pulsing when its hot . im really stuck any suggestions?

Does it start when you give it starting fluid while hot?

Obviously a fuel problem then. Not a csi issue, though. Got access to prom burning equipment?

Look at the cranking fuel tables. You'll find that the computer needs a certain amount of reference pulses from the distributor before it fires the injectors. If you make them fire earlier it may fix your problem.

i had the same problem with my 89 iroc. it does not have the cold start injector so that was not the problem for me. i spent two years chasing down the problem changing sensors and injectors and prom tuning. i was workin under the hood one morning and stumbled across a single red wire near the firewall on the passanger side that was disconnected. it had sort of a snap cap on it so i looked around that area and tucked under the wiring harness was the other end of it. snap it together and you guessed it, no more problem. i think it was some sort of ground for the computer and injector circuit. maybe this is your problem. just thought i would share my experience with you. hope this helps. good luck
