Smog system
I've seen that removing the smog system is worth a gain in HP. I have also seen on a different thread that it is possable to remove the smog pump, use an underdrive crank pulley and re-rout the belt and it will work fine.
My question is, can I remove the smog pump pulley, re-rout the belt and still run the car? or do I have to remove the entire system to avoid any problems?
I'm heading out to the track this weekend and would like to remove the smog pulley and re-rout the belt, for now, then eventually remove the entire smog system. Can I do this or will this cause a problem?
Thanks

You need to remove the pump alltogether, not just the pulley. Remove the pump, diverter box, all the hoses that run to your exhaust manifold. Then you need a belt thats about 3 inches longer IIRC. No computer work necessary just pull and go. The new belt should route from the alt, to the power steering, over the water pump, under the crank, straight to the A/C, then under the tensioner pulley.
BTW, this isnt worth any h/p, maybe 1 if that. Its mainly for weight gains, and gets the ugly crap out from underneath your hood.
EDIT, if you want to, go to Home Depot or something and get 2 1/2" pipe caps, these will screw onto your manifolds after you get the hoses and vales off the AIR tubes that come off of them.

I was mis-informed, I was under the impression the the smog pump robs the engine of 10-15 HP.
But, if the engine is running and the pump is not spinning does this cause a problem??, I do plan on removing the entire system when I install the underdrive pulleys, I just wanted to run it at the track this weekend without using the pump to see if the times were any better before installing the pulleys.
