Engine Trouble
a while back the idle started fluctuating on the car from below 500 to above 800 rpm. this wasnt as noticable while the ac was on. recently it started dying when you have to slam on the brakes. also tonight i went to start it and it fired up right away, but promptly died. i tried again several times and got the same result. i then started it and gave it gas. i was able to hold the rpms up and it kept running, but when i let off the gas it fell down and died. it doesnt sputter or try to keep running. it just dies. while i hold the rpms up, it sounds like its running normally. just within the last month, ive replaced the plugs, fuel filter, oil, pcv valve, and tranny mount. i cant think of what could be causing this. please help!

Welcome to thirdgen.org.
Do a seach for IAC setting, could be it's stuck, inoperative or the passages are gunked up...cracking the throttle is an indication.

" i then started it and gave it gas."
When you do this, you open up the throttle blades to allow more air into the intake.
The IAC is supposed to do this...open up (retract) and create a controlled vacuum leak through the TB, allowing more air into the intake.
Could be it's not moving, stuck, or the IAC passages are gumed up and restricted.
