in car craft there was an article on the tpi engines and they said that if you advance the time about 10 btdc that they got the most power can out of it but you must run a higher octane of gas like 93 or it will ping(i know from exprience) and another thing you can do to pick up a tenth or so is to take a hole saw and take you air filters out then take out the little rounded flaps that protect the filters form the rain coiming the air box out, then drill holes in the air boxand put those flaps back in

When i want my car jacked up like a mother, i just turn the distributor all the way to the right (or was it left?) and go out and roast some rustnags.
But seriously, there is no one answer for what base timing to run. It is something that can ONLY be determined through test and tuning. And butt-dyno doesn't count, if you're not at the track or measuring performance with a scan tool then you're just playing with yourself. And if you don't even have a scan tool to look for knock counts, odds are you're only going to take yourself backwards.

dude if you can't afford premium gasoline then why worry about what timing to run?
6 btdc is stock on my 87 vette and i'm assuming the same for yours since even in my 82 Z CFI car was 6.

the 10degrees btdc is what car craft found to be the best power but they said every car is different so to test it out
