oil pressure flutter??

hey my altenator is steady but my tach fluctuates at a stop light back and forth from 600to700rpms and the oil pressure keeps bumping like 40 to 50 40404040 then 50 again. this doesnt always happen, usuallt the preesure is at 30 stopped and 60 driving. i have 10w30 mobil oil a slighty leaking pan gasket and the bottom is dented. any ideas..

umm id fix the pan asap, but what your describing doesnt sound all to bad... your getting fuel pressure which is good... well at least at idle. When you are driving near or at WOT does it drop? Thats where you will have a problem.

If the bottom of the pan is dented, it could be blocking the oil pump pickup and reducing flow to the engine. The slight leak on the oil pan wouldn't affect the oil pressure any.

The fluctuating oil pressure while stopped is more than likely a bad sending unit. It's the one on the rear bridge of the block up by the manifold. Also check out the wire on it, and make sure you have a good solid connection and the wire isn't shorting out anywhere.

Good luck,
Matt
