Buying TPI car

A friend of mine wants to buy a 305tpi car from someone that lives around here. He has never had a 3rd gen before (he did have a mean 2nd gen) and people keep telling him how slow the 305's are. I got a list of the mods and ome info on the car and want opinions. How fast should he expect it to be, how reliable, and is it worth 3500.

"1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS, 25th Anniversary Edition. 305 V8 TBI with a 5 speed manual transmission, black with charcoal interior and T-Tops. Upgrades include: Edelbrock intake manifold, TBI Power plate TB spacer, injector spacers, Casper's throttle response cable, March aluminum pulleys, aluminum driveshaft, LSD rear-end, short throw shifter, Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs, Hotchkis rear suspension package, Energy Suspension bushings kit, IROC-Z front brake upgrade, Fiberglass hood, new clutch, new exhaust manifolds and y-pipe with cat, 3" Borla cat-back exhaust, strut tower brace, and a new set of Bridgestone Potenza RE730 tires all around"

The car you mentioned is not TPI, it is TBI. In any case, TBI 305's are pretty slow. MAYBE high 15s with the mods listed. As far as reliablily it is essentially an 80's GM car. Prolly not gonna be real reliable, lots of little thing go wrong. Shouldn't be any worse than 2nd gens though. Now that doesn't mean the car isn't worth 3500. The 25th cars are pretty desirable, especially if in good condition. Do you have any pics?

So when have you seen injector spacers on a TPI?

It is a TBI...plain and simple...unless the seller misspelled the whole ad...

Yeah, I'd be skeptical. Someone needs to go look at it - if you don't see intake runners it ain't a TPI. Conversly, if you see a round carb-style aircleaner, it's TBI.

If it is a TPI 305, I can say my '89 IROC with similar drivetrain is a hoot to drive. If he's concerned about numbers only, get a 350 hands down. But my point is he could have a ton of fun with a 305 and a stick shift - they are great.

Good luck - hope it's a TPI man,
K

Exactly. He didn't 'misspell' injector spacer or power plate, parts which would only be used on a TBI car.

And as such, it will be SLOW. If it's a nice car, and otherwise what he wants though, by all means, you can always swap the engine and TBI out and fix the slow problem. But as it sits now i'd probably smoke him in my olds alero.
