TPI swap
TPI swap
I've searched and searched but haven't found exact answers to my questions.
I have the 350 H.O. crate motor with TBI sitting on top and I hate that I can't reach full potential of this motor. Probably won't be able to with TPI either, but closer.
Anyway, I'm buying an 85 TPI setup, minus the ECM and wiring harness (which is what I want, I do not want a MAF system). It includes 19lb injectors and 24lb injectors.
According to the tech article on this site, I can go to GM and say I want a 92 Tuned Port injection wiring harness and be happy right? Then again, this site http://www.hotrodlane.cc/ sells a TBI to TPI wiring harness. It seems plug and pray? But its going to cost upwards of 600 dollars because I have an automatic (89 dollars more for auto).
I also hear about the GM harnesses not being complete? What the hell? Why not? If I do go the GM route, should I just buy a new accessory harness so when I go ripping everything out, I can just plug everything back in...right?
I can buy the actual ECM box and prom chip (stock) from autozone right? I thought you could anyway..I can buy the box and chip from them and just plug the GM harness into it, right?
Now for the throttle body, it will have the flat TPS. I can just buy a flat TPS pig tail from car quest and just splice in the 92 wiring harness? I suspect that will be the only splicing I'll have to do since I'll be buying a 92 wiring harness for a 92 car.
The setup also includes an adjustable FPR + 24lb injectors. I'll be buying the Vortec TPI base for scoggin dickey and buying SLP runners and mounting this on top of the 350 H.O. Will I have enough fuel?
Yes, I know about the fuel pump, that will be the first thing changed and tested before I begin the TPI swap...My question is which one? Just go to GM and buy a 92 Z28 5.7 Fuel pump?
Last question, does anyone know the K&N cone part number for the oblong-conical shaped cone filter that just bolts right onto the throttle body? I don't want to run the ducting for the air box nor spend the money on the box either.
Thanks for any help!

Go to the main page, IIRC there is an article detailing TBI to TPI swap (SD) and actually repinning the TB harness.
Don't go to GM for your harness...major bucks.
Several aftermarket harness manufacturers...in the 300 and less range.
Search this sites classified section too for an SD harness.

I am doing the same swap, except I'm going from an 305 TPI to a 350. Now, I was thinking about just getting a new harness from Painless, just to be safe and not use the 18 year old harness. Any input?

I used the painless harness for my swap to go from MAF to MAP. It went very well and they have awesome tech support.
So no one knows if the GM Harness is 100% and no one has ever used the TBI to TPI harness from hotrodlane.cc? Guessing no one knows.
Painless is complete? According to the tech article on this site, it isnt. I would like to keep my A/C etc..

The GM harness is 100%. I got one, just expect to pay a lot of money, and if you do get one get it for the auto. It is a lot less than the manual harness

From what i understand when i talked to the people at painless last year, the painless harness is for the fuel injection components only. You'll still be repinning things if you get it. I tried to get a 89' harness from gm and they don't make them anymore.

I purchased a used one in good shape. Plan on replacing most of the connector ends which have been subjected to heat and have become brittle or the locking tabs have broken off. Will strip all electrical tape and rewrap with new and replace wire loom with new. Check all circuits to make sure there are no broken wires. And will still pay way less than even buying a cheap new aftermarket harness.

The Painless is a major pain. I have heard that from many, many people. You will end up splicing the thing over and over.
Now, the route I am going is for the Street and Performance wiring harness. Street and Performance is a fairly major, but pretty popular, hot rod supplier that specializes in FI stuff. They do so many FI swaps into muscle cars and rods that its crazy. Anyways, they sell a SD TPI wiring harness that is the most complete I have seen, it even comes with the ECU, and they have great tech support from what I have heard, but you don't need it because it is completely plug-and-play. However, prices range from like $600-700. I am on a pretty tight budget as well, but I looked at is like: is it worth it to go the cheap route and try to splice and re-pin everything and burn up my time majorly, or go the more expensive route, and have it plug-n-play?
I had a nice thread going about this here:
