Vortec Heads???

Ok now I'm really lost and need help fast-lol Trying to build up my 350 tpi with new heads and cam. Been looking at new heads and I was going to get the Vortec package from SDPC2000.com, until I read this article from chevyhiperfromance http://chevyhiperformance.com/howto/97458/ . They say to stay away from the 906 casting and after calling SDPC they say they use the 906 in there package and of course when u bring this to there attention there not going to agree so can someone please explain this to me? Is it worth staying away from the vortec package now and getting another set of heads? I need to decide soon!!!

As I'm sure you know from your reading there are two casting numbers for the 350 Vortec heads, 062 and 906. Chevy High Performance later stated that not all 906 castings are "bad". The problem is in the exhaust port valve seat area. It's a larger seat, so it won't flow as much. GM made 906 castings with both the standard as well as heavy duty seats. Both casting numbers are even listed in the GM Performance Parts catalog under the same part number. In my opinion this is really only an issue when you are buying used parts. Then you just have to know what to look for. If you are getting the heads from Scoggin Dickey you'll be just fine if the Vortec head is the route you decide to take. There is a company call Pro Topline that makes a Vortec head, you might want to look at that before you buy. I personally have the GM 906 castings, and I am very pleased with them. Good luck with whatever direction you decide to go.

What pro topline would you recommend and do they have EGR?

So the scoggin dickey 906 castings don't have the heavy duty "bad" valve seats? -It would make sense that they would know the difference!

...I've also looked into these heads.

The Pro Topline I was refering to is basicly a copy of the GM Vortec design, but the Pro Topline version has some small tweeks that can be appealing. I just threw that out there so that you could have more choices. I stumbeld accross the Pro Toplines after I bought my heads, and thought you might like to check them out before you purchase since you are intrested in the Vortec castings. I don't belive the Pro Topline version has EGR, but to be honest I'm really not sure. If I had known about the Pro Topline heads before buying my heads I would have most likely bought those instead, but I am still very pleased with my GM Vortec heads. Abubaca, if Scoggin Dickey were selling the heavy duty castings as performance pieces I'm sure it would be all over the Internet. In my experiances with Scoggin Dickey they have been great to deal with. Scott, which cam are you going to run? I went with the ZZ4, but there are better cams out there for TPI. The ZZ4 is really hard to beat for the price, and it does a pretty good job too. Good luck

hey thanks alot man yea Im not really sure what I'm going to go with as in heads I was looking at the vortecs alot just b/c it came as the whole package and it was priced fairly well and I read and heard alot of good things about them. I was also looking at the trickflows. As for cam goes thats still prob depends on what heads I get but I been looking at the LPE 211 cam or a comp cam 264 or the 269.

Any word on the Edelbrock E-TEC heads? ..I'm not a huge Edelbrock fan, just curious.
