I tried searching for code 34 but apparently I can't perform a search for words less than 3 letters
Here's the problem:
'89 GTA 350 TPI
Car idles at about 600 rpms in park. After you give it gas in park, it will idle around 1500 rpms. The car dies when shifted into reverse or drive. It doesn't really have a problem starting.
It's throwing an ses code, code 34. That is low voltage MAF right?
But the MAF might not actually be the problem. If it is, that's a simple fix. I've also read about adjusting the IAC. I don't know what that is or how to do it. Can somebody please explain this process to me?
Also, the guy who owns the car doesn't know what or where the MAF is. So he thought it would help if he adjusted the TB blades. I don't know much about these cars yet, this is the one I want to buy but not until it's fixed (but I want to help him fix it).
He said he turned a threaded bolt on the side of the TB to adjust the blades. How can I check to make sure that the TB is opening and closing properly? That would affect it's idleing properties right?
Sorry for the long post guys, but I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out. I'm gonna try and make down there tomorrow afternoon and I want to go well equipped.
One other thing: I have an 85mm MAF for my '02 SS, I know it's a long shot, but is it a direct fit for this car?

it could just be imtermittent. Clear the codes by unhooking the negitive battery cable. wait a while, then put it back on, start the car and see if you get an SES light.
If you do get the 34 code again
clear the codes agian.
dont ground the aldl
dissconnect the maf and start the car.
Push the rpms to above 2k for about a min or untill the ses goes on.
after a min, or if you get the light, ground the aldl and scan for codes.
If you get code 12, check for short to any of the MAF wires.
if you get code 33, replace the MAF.
the MAF is a black plastic tube with wire connections hanging from the bottom of it. No your 4th gen MAF will not work.
If you do have a faulty MAF, get the Wells SU-145 Maf. It doesnt use the "hot wire" that the stock one uses so its less prone to break.

When you say don't ground the aldl you mean don't jump from "A" to "B" with the paperclip right? That means just to leave it alone.
When you say to ground the aldl does that in turn me jump terminal "A" and "B" to scan for codes?
Sorry, I'm new to this, thanks.

wont by disconecting the MAF get a code 33 anyway cuz u disconected it?
Supreme Member
yes, but what is the problem if it DOESNT flash code 33 after you disconnect the MAF? Ill let you ponder that one for a little bit!! What I wrote up top is from a GM diagnostic hand book, i.e. exactly wtf your supposed do to figure it out.

umm ok? i was just ask'n.. i didnt know..
