Timing

i dunno a whoel lot about timing and am not sure if mine is set correctly or if i an change my timing. my little 305TPI. isn't running right. and i just want to know how to check the timing. and if it is off where should it be and how do i fix it?

You will need a timing light. Disconnect the single (grey) connector next to your coil to keep the computer from adjusting the timing as you set it. The timing light will have a positive and a negative (power supply wires) hook them to the battery. The other wire should have a clip that goes over the #1 (front driver's side) plug wire. Make sure all the wires are away from any moving parts. Start the car and the light will flash when the plug fires, just point it at the harmonic dampner pulley (the bottom one) and observe the mark that is being illuminated and read the corrisponding mark on the timing tab. To adjust it you have to loosen the bolt that is under the distrubutor, which locks it in position. To advance it turn it counter clockwise, and of course the other way retards it. Once you get it set, lock the distubutor down and recheck the timing to be sure it didn't move when you tightened it and reconnect the wire you disconnected.
