TPI intakes for 305

I was just checking things out at the Lingenfelter website after hearing about his passing and I was looking at the Lingenfelter/Accel Super Ram intake - they state that it's not recommended for unmodified 305s. I probably should just ask them but I figured I'd try the expertise of you all first - why not use it on the 305?

Then, if I get to doing some head work or changing them completly, trying a different cam, opening up the exhaust and keeping it 305ci, would this thing be appropriate then?

What about if I were to decide to stroke it to 335 and incorporate the above mods? It would obviously include some reprogramming too - would the Super Ram be appropriate for that set-up?

If someone is familiar with the various aftermarket intakes for TPI including the Super Ram, please chime in - I'm just trying to understand the logic behind the different designs. I see that the super ram is a shorter runner than the stock TPI but what's the benefit behind the massive upper plenum? And is that why it don't work so good with the 305?

Thx, Kevin

The short runners are why the intake isn't well suited to your 305. The stock TPI allows the 305 to actually make low end torque. By shortening the runners low end torque is lost at the expense of high end power, but a stock 305 won't rev high enogh to get the extra power. Just bolting on the intake will actually make less power than the stock setup.

To really use this on a 305 you need heavily ported heads or new heads, a new cam, and some computer work. The 335 stroker isn't a bad idea either. I'd probably just go to a 350 or a 383 though. It's the same amount of work, and about the same cost for a better engine.

i'd like to see some dyno#'s and track times from some of the 305 lt1 guys.

I'm spending a tad bit of money on the 305 because i already have it and want to get it back on the road. If/when it goes, i'll step up to a bigger engine.
stroking the 305 isn't with it, imho.

I'd like to see some dyno number on an otherwise stock 350 with the LT1 intake. The only test results I've seen were on a 383 car with AFRs and a cam. Even with this combo it lost 30 lbs/ft of low end torque, and only started making more horsepower north of 5,500. Fortunately the engine could rev past 6,000 to take advantage of this. Even then the drag results were about the same before and after the swap. Also, the swap compared the LT1 to the existing HSR setup, not a TPI style intake. I bet a TPI would lose even more torque, and a stock motor is totally done by 5,000, so there's no way you'll see any of the top end power.

My 305 has an lt1 intake. With the stock tpi i ran 14.6 at 93 mph with the lt1 i ran a 14.5 at 95 mph then i put in a 5 speed and ran a 14.3 at 98-99 mph.pulled a 2.05 on stock tpi with automatic and 2.18 with the lt1 auto. But let me tell you over 60 mph the lt1 intake just pulls way harder then the tpi did.and it still holds a lot of bottem end torque. If i took you for a ride you would feel the torque and think it was a tpi.I also have sr torquer heads and a 210/220 .480 .480 cam.And the chip is still tuned for the tpi so theres a lot more in it.

So, stock 305?
