a die grinder, the proper grinding bits(carbide) and a vise to hold the plenum while you are grinding.

Some gear lube comes in handy too. So you can lube up the die grinder and the bit. It will cut the metal a lot faster that way. Main thing is to warm gloves, long sleeves, and saftey glasses. The metal shards go all over the place and you will be digging at your skin for hours if they imbed in it.

Theres a good tech article on it. Might have to do some searching to find it.

Here's a decent site with pics http://www.ws6transam.org/efi.html

Vader has an excellent article that I used a while back. Either search the General Tech board for it (or the TPI board)...or it might be in the Tech Articles section. --you'll want to make sure you get all new gaskets for when you're reinstalling the plenum.

heres my 87 IROC-z Ported plenum, I used my dremel tool for this, but shortly after I bought a CH Mini diegrinder for working on my tpi base for my IROC, and wow does the amount of material removed in the same amount of time differ, I could have done 4 plenums within the same 4 hour period of time I spent porting with the dremel, high rpm cannot be replaced by a more powerful air tool.

I took these pictures slightly off center, so it looks like I ported it weirdly. In 88 the egr port in the center was removed from the casting, so thats why my 87 has a huge metal, as where the 88's and later had a bump behind the center, but no port, so you can remove alot more material as I did with my 89's but I have no pictures of that.

Check out Vadar's article it's very well wrote. He states in it that there are humps in the front of the plenum where the EGR passages are.

If you don't have a die grinder or a dremel you can do it with a power drill and a rotary file bit. I ported a couple like that, takes forever compared to the proper tool though, but it works well enough...

Is that a hole in the upper right about 1/2 in from the throttle body gasket surface.

Yep that's a hole but it is patched now. This TPI is Kim's (TPIgirl) and it's still being worked on (not running yet). It's a very extensively ported stock TPI.
