Where to go first from stock?
ok guys its tax time and in anticipation of a return of between 1,500 and 2,000 i would like to ask where do i go from stock? all i have now is a few small things done like k&ns, tb bypass, gutted airbox, ported front of the plenum, chrome valve covers and thats it. the only problem i have is some semi leaky valve seals. the engine has 170,000 miles on it and i believe it was rebuilt at 100,000 or 120,000 but i forget. it is still running probably as strong as the stock LB9 305 TPI can be. appearance is not a big factor right now since i cant afford paint i dont want rims or anything like tint or whatever. so help me decide where to go from this point and sort of just make some suggestions.

If it was me I would look for a 4 bolt 350 from a junkyard or what have you get a stroker kit and take it all to a machine shop. You may not get the best heads with it but if you find something with 2.02 1.6 valves that would get you going for now. I think you could pull it with that budget. Most of the stuff you have on the 305 would work on the 350 except the injectors and chip would have to changed. But thats just what I would do.

I agree with shaggy on the 350. At least get a 350 and build it up. Headers can be a PITA, but once in you will be able to feel a difference. Once I got mine installed, we were able to hear what sounded like a lifter knocking, but was actually a spun crank bearing. So installing headers can bring out the unwanted in the motor if it is there.
