Getting ready for my motor, need some advice
Hey guys, i need some help. I got a complete 305 TPI and auto trans from an 87 TA for my bird. THe motor and trans are both on a recent rebuild.
The heads have been ported, not sure how much though.
All i know is, the thing will break them loose at 30 with good tires.
Anyways, this motor is going in my 91 V6 bird. I was going for an L98, but i just bought a 30th Z28, so money is tighter than i thought it would be.
I got this complete drivetrain for free, so i want to put a few goodies on it before i set it in.
It already has a good catback, and i was looking for suggestions for a healthy cam, and some good headers.
If anyone can post what they have in their 305, how they like it, and what it cost, that would be great.
I would like to have a mid 14 sec car when i am done.
Is the search function broke, i keep getting a timeout error when i search?
thanks

Headers are definately the best bang for buck on this motor. If you don't have them already get a set.
Don't go overboard on the cam. You need to look for power in the idle to 5,500 RPM range. Anything more and the engine won't be able to support the airflow anyway, so power will be worse than with a smaller cam.
Underdrive pulleys are a good way to clip a tenth off your ET. There's a whole thread devoted to this topic, so I hope nobody feels the need to try and reiterate what was already said there here. Look it an an see what it has to say.
With EFI you can safely run about 10:1 or 10.5:1 with iron heads. Check out your compression and see what it actually spec out at. Get the heads milled, or run a thin head gasket to get the compression you want.
See what has been done to the heads. I would stick with stock size valves, but doing a gasket match and, full bowl work, cutting down the guides, and polishing and ccing the chambers area ll good ways to pick up power. If this stuff hasn't already been done go ahead and do it.
What rear gear is in the car? Another fairly cheap way to get better ETs is to go with a 3.73 gear and a posi. Bang for buck it's on par with nitrous if you have low gears to start with (2.73 or 2.77s for example).

3.23s aren't too bad, but 3.73s would be better. You could reduce your ET by up to 1/2 second using the 3.73s. Just something to think about.
Thankfully you've got the good auto trans. '87 was the first year for the upgraded 700R4. The ones before are a lot weaker, and prone to failure.

LT1 cam would be a perfect cam for u. It has mild lift with excellent street manners. TPiS's fast pack would be excellent to get ahold of for ur motor. check out www.tpis.com for details Also porting the upper plenum is a great "free mod" to do for the motor. I could go on and on about what to do but its all on what u want out of the motor and what ur buildin the motor to do.

You'll really need a highly modified TPI style intake to get airflow up to the LT1 cams limit. A cheaper approach would be an HSR or LT1 intake.

No the LT1 is around the ~.430 +/- lift area thats perfect for a mildly ported head/intake stock 305 bottom end setup. Although HSR is a very good choice for any build. U will deffantly feel a gain and take advantage of the cam with ur current set-up.

HSR on your 305
Just remember, the Stealth Ram is NOT emissions legal nor compliant. That's why I had to go with a Super Ram instead on my 383....
