Tach inaccurate

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but; I have a 1990 5.7 TPI IROC-Z with a very inaccurate tachometer. @2000 rpm it indicates 3000 rpm. Has anyone experienced this problem? I have the original factory service manual and it has no reference to this condition.

Is the tach itself at fault? Shoud I replace it with a new one, if they are still available?

ANDYZ28,

My tach stopped working in my 87 Z28. I installed an MSD 6T ignition box and a Autometer Shift Lite tach and it started working again, I left the Shift Lite tach in place. You may have a loose wire causing your problem. If you want to try to replace the tach, try ebay. I haven't seen individual tachs up for auction, but have seen whole instrument clusters go for as little as $45.

I have several of the 82-89 instrument clusters, but the 90-92 clusters are quite different. It is rare to see one on eBay for a V8.

Sorry, didn't see that you had the 90-92. There's a local guy here that deals in nothing but used Camaro / Firebird parts. He's pretty reasonable on prices, I bought a set of 90-92 RS/Z28 wheels from him for only $225. He is just outside of Columbia, SC.

I also found this one on ebay.
