swap: MAF to Speed Density

whats needed for the conversion? yea im a new guy, and i havent seen a how-to posted for this yet. im assuming an ecm and MAP sensor off a 90-92 car, but is there anything else? how much of a difference will i see over the MAF system in my 88 GTA? Im in the desert if climate is a factor.

You need to do a lot more research....HAHAHAHAHAHA. Its not hard but its just not a matter of mindlessly swaping parts. You have to repin the ECM harness. Happy searching and good luck.
P.S. I HAVE done this conversion and its a lot of wiring, not for a noob.

whether you're a noob or not is irrelevant. i was a "noob" when i did my SD swap and i still managed to do it. hell, i still consider myself a noob or whatever. you just need to research it and be familiar with exactly what you're doing going from maf to SD. also, mike davis' site is infinitely helpful. i would start there and check out what's involved in the repinning. it's the part that takes the longest with labeling all the wires, etc, but just make sure you keep your stuff organized and know what pins go where and you will be fine.

I didnt need to re-pin anything. Bought an ECM (7730) with memcal from a 350 90-92 and a painless wiring harness. Got the knock sensor that reads 3.9 0hms instead of 100 and a map sensor from the 90-92 etc. Works great.

no wonder your the captain  i was figuring with just the different sensors and one of those painless wiring harnesses would do it no prob, since my 88 has almost all the same sensors. Besides, from what Im seeing if I ever plan on running a turbo or a vortech s/c routing the maf sensor in looked kinda hard.

Yep,
Just make sure your sensors match up for the speed density system (yrs. 90-92) and you shoudnt have any problems. Be aware that Painless lists part numbers in their manual that comes with the harness that do not match up. I bought the wrong knock sensor because of them. Just double check everything that I mentioned earlier. Also, SD isnt kind to many mods. It's not as forgiving as MAF.

speed density is very sensitive to change,if you swap cams, injectors, intake you will need to do it all together so you spend time and or $reburning chips, pretty much it seems if you go and lose weight you seem to need a chip mod LOL J/J.. but i will NEVER do mass air again!!!!!!!

v6 sd harness

How about this:

I've got a 1992 firebird 3.1L V6 SD (stole it for 300 bucks!) that I want to put a 350 TPI in. Can I use the existing wiring harness and ECM , just changing the prom?

Hey captain, how much was the painless harness to convert maf to map ecm, and what is the part number of the correct harness?

You were able to use the 3.1L memcal in the 350 engine? I didn't think that was possible! the 730 ECM for the 350 has the $8D mask and the 3.1L has a $88 mask, the prom is completely different! Enlighten me if I'm mistaken on this.

Here's your how-to:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/

I just did the swap two weeks ago using this guide and it was easy. Also visit the prom board, as your really going to need to learn how to tune once you do this swap. If I couldn't burn my own proms my car would be out of commission until I learned to burn them or paid some one $$$.
