What is a good cam for 86 TPI

Has anyone replaced their cam on a 86 TPI. I have read that the stock cam is responsible for a 20 hp loss. Would like to change to a cam that increases low to midrange torque. Thanks

Ill assume since it's an 86, that its a 305 right?? If you want a cheap alternative, Id find a used LT1 cam, or maybe a ZZ4 cam.....if you want more or better advice, give COMP cams a call or email. Hope this helps......

You're right its a 305. Has anyone done a dyno on the difference between stock and the zz4 cam.

Those cams won't work in an 86 because it has a flat tappet not a roller cam.

what do you think of this one: comp cam XE268H

224/230 @ .050 268/280 advertised duration 477/480 lift 110 lobe sep.

I'm looking at putting that one into my 1992 firebird SD system.

Way too big for a 305 unless there is something about the heads you arent telling us.

I have that cam in my '86 (non-roller 350), the XE268 that is. Too much for a mild 305. You probably need to list a little more info about this '92 you mention though. Best bet would to be to call Comp Cams, get their recommendation, and then ask questions here to other people who are running whatever they recommend.

The 212/218 114LSA would be good for a mild 305. I am looking at the 218/224 for my setup. I was considering the 224/230 but I don't want it to sound like a racecar. I'm not sure how much lope I would have with that cam. But I will have a heavily modded 305 with heads and possible aftermarket intake.
