first time volt meter user here...

could you please tell me what to set my multimeter on in order to test my TPS voltage. I have a shop manual and know how to place the jumper wires but i'm not sure how to use the multimeter...I know this sounds elementary but i have owned a carbed '86 for the last 9 years...I just bought this '89 iroc, 305 TPI, about 2 months ago...I have replaced the IAC and TPS and just realized the problem was my MAF...I want to properly set my TPS voltage, though, before I install my MAF...Thanks

Set it to Voltage Direct Current (VDC).

What Trickster said. If you still have problems, try to take a pic of the face and I'll tell you which one to use.

I set mine to 0.51v at idle, and make sure it goes over 4.0v at WOT, If that helps at all.

If you have it set to 1000V you will not see anything because the TPS voltage is in the range 0 - 5V. Change it to something lower, let's say 10V.

Make sure that TPS is still connected to the car harness. Having ignition on also helps.

one important thing ot remember about using a milti meter is always set the dial to the what you want BEFORE you touch the terminals otherwise you may fry the multi. I always see people tap into something electrial with the multi meter turned off then they turn the dial to the desirered setting and by doing htis your actually setting the multi meter to each setting you go past beofre you get to the one you want. As I said, this can fry the meter in certain aplications so dont do it.

formula350_87 is correct too. that setting is way to high for what your testing.

thanks for all the help...i bought an automotive multimeter at auto zone...a bit pricey @ $30.00 but it did the trick...it has several settings and an instruction book...the iroc is now running...now i just need to figure out why it takes so long to idle down after coming to a stop...also, if you let off the gas when your running 45-55 mph, it will slow down to 35-40 mph and stay there (on flat ground) all by itself thanks again!!

clean the throttle body out. It might ne clogged up with carbon. also, take the IAC motor out from the side of it and clean it. the pintle might have a lot of carbon on it also.
