i searched and i cant find the answer

subject is the super ram.

question: do i need to buy the lower intake manifold, or can i buy the runners and plenum and use the TPI base manifold? i know you'll say the TPI has smaller ports, but i didnt know if the plenum and intake go hand in hand.

anyone know please?

I don't think the factory base is compatible with the superram. I think you can only purchase it as a complete unit anyway, but I could be wrong.

It WILL bolt up to the stock base, but as you mentioned, it is a major mismatch in port size and therfore flow capability. This is the worse of two evils on mismatched port sizes. The air will have to make a transition from a large port to a small port at were the superram plenum and runners hit the stock base. This will create more of a restriction to flow than the opposite, flowing from a small port into a large one. Obviously, perfectly matching the ports through the entire intake track is ideal.

Long story short, I wouldn't be looking for much if any gain in hp with this mod alone. However, if more mods are planned in the future (ie. an aftermarket base) this wouldn't be to bad a move.

Given the Accel SR base fits stock TPI runners and plenum (I ran that way for years), it should work in the other direction also...stock base w/ SR plenum and runners.

You could also possibly use SDPC's Vortec head-compatible TPI base with a SR plenum and runners. That would be a killer setup.

Dustin is right on the money with this one. Yep, it will "work", but it's kinda pointless (which I hate to say, I'm using a SR myself and love it, hate to discourage anyone).

By pointless, I mean you may not see much improvement. Some, probably, but not a whole lot because the improved flow you're trying to get will now be restricted by the intake manifold instead of the runners and plenum. Most folks go the other way first and replace the intake and later do the runners and plenum. You'd probably see a bigger performance gain in that half of the swap than the other pieces if you're only going to do a part of it for now. It's also a cheaper first step. But your car will still run the other way. You just won't see a big performance gain without doing the whole setup (intake, runners, and plenum).

Hope this helps, contact me direct if you need to. Have a Great Day!!!

so any bigger intake manifold will do, other than the accel? i dont want to pay 500$ for a base from accel, i see the TPIS big mouth is 425, what about Scoggin dicky.. whats the price on that one? or do they only make Vortec TPI bases? i dont want to have to change heads. i just got my L98 iron heads rebuilt and had a larger exhaust valve cut to 1.60. plus for new heads thats like another 550$.

How comfortable are you with porting out your stocker base? If you do a reasonably good job, and work hard on blending the transition, you can make it work well and actually see a significant difference in breathing.

You can even send off your stock base to extrude hone, and they will run it thru the process for $375.00. $425.00 for an unported aftermarket base, or $375.00 for an extrude honed stock base. It would be interesting to see which one performs better.
