What to do to an engine that hasn't been started in 5 years?
I found a deal on a early 90's corvette that was too good to pass up. Only problem is that the engine hasn't been started in 4-5 years. The car was taken good care of and ran well up until the owner stopped driving it. So what I need to know is what I'm going to need to do to get the engine back to good shape. I know the gas inside it is bad by now, but I'm not sure how to go about cleaning the fuel system. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
pop out all of the spark plugs and squirt some oil in the cylinders, and let it sit for a while. Drain all the fluids out, and replace them. Drop the tank, and disconnect and remove the pickup assembly. Disconnect the lines at the motor. Remove the fuel filter. Take some compressed air and blow it through the lines, and then install a new fuel filter. Clean the pickup to get rid of any varnish or buildup.
Try and turn over the engine by hand using the harmonic balancer or flywheel. If it doesn't move, don't force it. You'll mess up the rings. I'd spray some more oil in it and let it sit. Then try again later.
If you get it to come loose, great. Pull the distributor out and prime the engine. Put 8 new plugs in it, replace the wires, cap and rotor too while you're at it.
If you can't get it to come loose, I still wouldn't force it. You'll mess up the rings pretty good. I'd tear the motor down and do a basic rebuild on it.
After all that, crank it over. Hopefully you'll be good to go
Good luck

what I would do
well this is what I would do, first before you drive it anywhere, change the oil, there is probabbly all kinds of contaminats in there and you don't want them going back into the engine. secondly when putting new oil back insted of just putting it in through the little filler cap I would take off the valve covers and get oil on all the rockers. the fuel should be ok, I would put some kind of stabilizer or somthing in there to get rid of any water, I would also run the tank down to just about empty before I refill it. needless to say check all the other fluid levels, and first chance you get I would change all the fluids and filters and you will probabbly need a tune up and new battery to get it to start.
again this is what I would personally do, and this is just a suggetion. good luck though
