Somtimes smokes on startup sometimes not
Were painting my car right now and when we start it to let it run a little while it smokes (white) alot, but later in the day when we move it it'll run perfect. We think it might be the oil pump, but doing a search it seems it could be head gaskets. Anyone know what it is so that we can get it done before it goes back on the road in a week and really misses up.

If the smoke disappears quickly then it's water vapor.
Else it could be your valve seals wearing down.
Some people say that if you smell a sweet (maple, pancake surup) sent from your exhaust then its your head gasket.
Also check your oil... milky/ brown color in the oil means water or coolant got in there... leads you to head gasket.
Last also... check your coolant level to see if its going down and no sign of coolant on the ground.
medium to thick white smoke!!!!

Valve stem seals leaking and at first start up burns off excess oil and later in the day no new oil has accumulated so no smoke. A very common problem on SBC engines regardless of miles.
