89 MASS Air meter
I heard that a good HP gain can be attained from swapping in an 89 MASS with no prom burning, just plug in and go.
Anyone else hear this?
Mine is an 88 so I wonder if the factory hp diff would be programmed into the 89 meter?

If you are referring to the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF), I do believe that the part is the same for both years and would not make any difference.

Thats what I'm referring to (MAF) but I just heard that they were different and could provide a benefit, so I thought I'd ask, but you might be right, they may be the same part #.
I'll check at work tomorrow.

99% sure they are the same.
Keep in mind the MAF sensor only reads how much air is flowing, it doesn't doesn't interperet any of the data.
...now if the computer were different....

You may be thinking about the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor which is not compatable with the 88 or 89 TPI engines without some major modifications.

I'm pretty sure the 88 and 89 L98's were the same, no?
....the 1990 L98 went to speed density, like Trickster said, and they have a MAP sensor. The HP did jump 10 HP with this switch I beleive.

okay thanks,
Any ideas of getting a bigger MAF like the 4th gens or a MAF translater like the Buicks can now do.
Mine already has the screens removed.

Granetteli Motorsports has recently released one for our cars, but it's about $400+.
....I don't think it's a huge restriction. Not saying it's not ANY restriction, but it's not worth $400+. Lot's of people are making big HP with the stock sensor.

Same part. '89 did not have a cold start injector. You are probably hearing about the Wells unit. No we can't use the newer MAFs yet. No we don't have a translator. Unless you are making serious power, you really don't need to remove the screens.
