Do these head suck?
Do these head suck?

That is what I found on my motor, that and finally tracked down the block casting number and found out it is indeed a 305. Numbers match the car to boot. But I guess it explains why this 350 (
) was so damn slow
Anyway, back to the heads. I'm putting this engine into a s10 4x4 project, and was wondering if these head with some work, along with a cam and headers would be able to get me to 250-300 hp?

They definatly arent the best, for performance
Here is why, they are made in the late 70s early 80s = light castings
They are also made for small engines = low performance
If you put this in an S-10, youll get stomped by 4.3's everywhere, if its stock

Well that'd totally defeat the purpose of the v8 swap since it has a 4.3 in there already!
What kind of heads and cam should I look for? Most of the recommendations around here involve getting more hp/tq in the upper RPM range. But I'm looking to keep/gain more low end torque since it's going to be a trail rig.

The age old question..
"So you want to go fast? How deep are your pockets???"
Start building a 350-400, ditch the 305
Heres my old S-10

But I don't want to go fast.
I just want to go over stuff, usually pretty slowly so as I don't break anything
But for now the 305 is staying, so I'm looking for what can improve it's low-end torque situation.

the aluminum L98 corvette heads would be great for what you want to do. smaller intake ports to keep the velocity up. these heads make excellent midrange power in my 305 and i have a fair amount of cam. i am sure with a milder cam these heads could make a 305 a good strong motor on the bottom end.
