Where to set timing "for now"
Here's the deal:
I've got my ZZ4 cam and headers installed, on top of several other little things. I've earballed the timing so far, and it runs well, but this weekend I'm gonna use my BRAND NEW timing light and do it right!!! Problem is, where is right?
I'm having the car dyno tuned and having a chip burned by a local FI guru in a few weeks, but I wanna have it running pretty good from now until I get the tune done.
I know 6* advance is factory, but I also know a lot of stock L98 guys are running around 8* or 9* for a little more kick. I honestly don't fully understand the theoretical effects of timing on a motor. Should I just keep it at around 6* and wait for it to be properly tuned, or should I just mess with it a little.
Just looking for opinions...

I kinda figured that you clicked the wrong forum ha. I'm sure with that cam it'll want a few more degrees over stock, best would be to modify the bin. I'd say for now keep it maybe 4* over stock if it doesn't knock. Then make the real changes when you get it tuned on the dyno.
Don't lie to the ECM. If you're going to have it dyno tuned and a custom chip made, leave it at 6* and have the tuner raise the timing on the chip.
The reasoning is that there are calculations that the ECM does based on timing and you will get a better tune if your actual timing is the same as what is set in the chip.
PS. Remember to disconnect the tan/blk wire!
