Help Converting to TPI
Ok, I'm new here and need some help.
heres what I got,
A '77 Pontiac Fire bird Formula,
and A TPI 305,
and the only thing that car has in common with the TPI is that its GM.
I know I have to get a new wiring harness, but I dont' know what else I need, What do I need to hook all those plugs on the harness to to get this thing going down the road?
and About the smog control, do I have to have all that stuff? what would it take to get rid of it?
thanks, I really appreciate all the help.

Why don't you take a look at some of the swap articles in the tech section.
A buddy of mine did a swap in a '69 camaro. The intake and wiring and all that was straight forward. He had to run new lines to the tank, and use an inline pump because he couldn't get the thirdgen sending unit to fit inside the tank.
btw. I have a 155lph inline pump for sale, if you need it.

What year is the 305 tpi? '85-'89 used a maf system, but the '85 computer was different than '86-89. In '90 G.M. went tp speed density. You can convert a maf system to speed density. You need to know what you have because you will need to have compatible components to tune it. You don't want to start eliminating smog components with the G.M. ecm unless you know how to burn a custom chip for it. If you want to eliminate smog pieces, you will need to convert to DFI. One other thing, I think the harness for a maf system is different than the speed density harness in terms of where the pins go in the plugs for the ecm, but I'm not sure. You don't want to use an ecm from an '85, I think you can upgrade it to '86-'89 without changing anything else. The maf system will compensate more for airflow changes than the speed density system, but the ecm is slow. Also the compensation is for relatively small variations. If you make large changes in airflow, exhaust flow, or vacuum, it may not compensate. The speed density ecm is much faster, but it needs a custom chip to compensate for changes in intake, exhaust, or vacuum.

Probably the wrong board to ask this on.
Check Ultim8z's web site for a 2nd gen swap pdf.
Search his name on here. If I spelled it right.
Since you need an ecm, you can get one for your year 305 or swap to a newer one. Go to a junk yard and look for a 165 # ecm. That's the last 3 numbers. Or you can swap to a 90-92 camaro ecm, and loose the MAF and 7th injector. It's a 7730 ecm.
They came in a lot more cars than just camaro's.
There is a cross list on the TGO home page in the tech article area that tells what cars to look at for both ecm's.
Unless you get lucky, you'll need to buy the correct chip for your 305. Mine for a 92 350 was $54 from GM parts direct and about $85 from the dealer. There was a post a while back about 305 memcals being hard to get. 90-92 ecms take a memcal. The KS stuff is on the mem cal. While the earlier cars have a little box under the hood that does the KS stuff. The earlier models take a calpak. You can buy a harness from a number of places such as Painless wiring among others. You'll also need to get a speedo sender for the appropriate ecm/chip from the same place.
Or you can modify a harness from the junk yard too. Easy for some, not for others. I got mine out of a quad 4 olds. Just need to change a few connectors and move a few pins in the ecm harness.
Ebay has harnesses too on occasion.
As far as smog goes, you might be able to get somebody to burn a chip for you with it turned off. If you can find the bin file (program) you need with just smog delete, then Craig Moates will sell you an adapter and chip and put the bin on it for real cheap.
less than $50. See Moates.net for prices. You need just an adapter and chip. You could do your own chip burn for about $85 more. See Burn1 on Craigs' site. A smog delete bin is pretty easy to get. If I knew 305's, I could tell you where etc..
And you really should get your gas tank sumped. A radiator shop can usually do it for you.
One of these day's I'll get the EFI on my car.
If I ever get time....

Sorry I am so late repling to you, I didn't get my tech support paycheck from you yet. When it is free it is not always your way right away.
On to the question. It is probably ok for me to guess that you have a 85-89 TPI set up. If you can give us the ecm number and we can go from there. Or if there is or is not a ninth injector in the side of the intake. Is the harness you have complete?
Starting from the back you will need a new Walbro in tank or in line fuel pump. Then you will need a line from it to a MPFI fuel filter. Then a line going to the TPI rails. Then a return line from the rails to the tank, and one more to vent pressure.
You are going to need a coolant temp sensor, knock sensor, Manifold temp sensor, Throttle position sensor, probably new or cleaned MAF sensor, etc,.
Again we need to know the year of your ecm to give you exact part numbers.
As stated earlier you will need smog equipment if you don't have a custom chip burned. That is about all I can say without seeing pictures or better descriptions of parts and more exact questions. There are a couple of good articles in the tech ection also for you to read.

It doesen't have an ecm, all thats there is the engine and a harness that is no good.
I'm pretty sure all the sensors are still there.
