Rocker Suggestion?

I am thinking of installing 1.6 Roller Rockers on my L98 the same time I do my valvesprings. I am just having trouble choosing a brand.

Comp Cams Pro Magnum $325
Crane Golds $320
Summit's (Looks exactly like golds, cept blue) $279

The main issue is durability. I have heard bad things about aluminum rockers cracking and such. I have also heard that it is because people spin the engine too high.

So far, I am kinda leaning towards the Pro-Magnums. Thoughts?

(I am running a LT4 cam and Comp 981 springs on stock iron L98 heads.)

Due to the properties of aluminum, all aluminum rockers will fatigue, and eventually fail. It is simply the nature of the beast. Personally, I use steel roller tip rockers for a street engine, but a lot of people use the aluminum.

I agree with LJ. Aluminum seems to have a lower fatigue resistance than steel.

For a budget, I would go with Comp Magnums. If you can toss the change, both Crower and Comp offer steel full rollers.

If you used synthetic oil, would that drop the temps enough to use the aluminum rockers? I did read that the Summit ones are heat treated. I was also told that the Summit brand ones are made either by Comp or Crane. They're just repackaged by Summit to sell. You're getting the same product for less because of the lack of "brand name."

Heat doesn't kill the rockers. Stress does. Oil temperatures have no imput over the stress that a rocker arm undergoes.

As said above, aluminum has a fatigue factor. It will flex, and eventually crack. Its just how they are.

Supposedly, there is a centerbolt version out now.

Does anyone know what kind of improvement I will see with it? I have a mild bolt-on L98.

There has always been a centerbolt version. The self aligning rockers for 88 up heads were only available for centerbolt heads, therfor the self aligning pro mags for 88 up heads were made specifically for centerbolt heads.

Hmph, I always heard that you had to modify the valve covers slightly to get them to fit.

you do in most cases, but it is very easy. This is a good thing though, as the width of the trunion enables larger needle bearings to spread the load.

Yeah, you had to bend some pieces. There is a link around here somewhere...

Or it's an excuse to just get a nice new shiny pair that the 1.6's will fit underneath.

I am useing the magnums ( not pro ) . But I went for the 1.52 ratio. In a book by David Visard .....he found these rockers to be 80% stronger than stock . I figured they would be all I need . and I am runnngi the SDPC 1007 springs ...good for .570 lift. 350 lbs'@ 1.2 "and 120 lbs at 1.8 . I too am useing the stock heads ( APR studed )

The springs were a HUGE help. Turns out, at 1.700" the old ones were at 80lbs. I also had someone shatter my rear hatch, so I just now got the money to do the rockers.
